Nytro Freeride build (2013 build page 27)

Mid Season update:

I now have over 1500 miles on this season and the sled now has over 4000 miles on it so I figured I'd update on how things are going.

Update on issues:

#1 Steering pivot point coming loose; REDUCED. After adding all the loctite to it it still comes loose however it takes about 500 miles before it needs to be tightened. I plan to add a nylon loc nut to it over the summer.

#2 Slider wear; REDUCED. Since I added the 4 wheels at the rear the rear that area is fine. However at the front of the sliders where the bend is, is where they are wearing out. I am only getting 500 miles out of a set of sliders. I am thinking of a set of excell wheels for next season.

#3 Handwarmers; RESOLVED! Between the spray foam, RSI kit and ROX extensions I now have the warmest grips I've ever had on a sled. I've been out on some very cold days and my hands have not been cold. Once they warm up I have to turn them down they are so hot.

#4 Ice build-up; RESOLVED! With the OFT block off plate I have reduced to ice build up to next to nothing. I have been out with stock Nytros same day same conditions and the difference was amazing.

#5 Loose front end; REDUCED. I have taken some of the nuts off and put red loctite on them and they seem to be holding or at least taking longer to loosen up. I plan to replace factory nuts in front and rear suspension with nylon lockers over the summer.

#6 Starter solenoid freeze-up; RESOLVED! I put a new solenoid in the sled and treated the connections to some dialectic grease and I have had a few cold starts since without issue.

#7 Skid durability; ONGOING. I am not sure if the damaged and missing parts was a freak thing, or one thing broke and took out the others. This is just something I'm keeping an eye on at this point.

#8 Code 48, fuel system relay freeze up; UNTESTED. I have bought a new relay but I have not had a chance to put it in. A buddy who changed his says the new relay looked different then the one he took out.

#9 Limiter strap wear; ONGOING. I just found them worn again and I haven't figured a solution yet. I'm thinking an anti-stab kit would prevent this.

Are the limiter straps worn in the lower side since you figure that antistab weels would limit the problem?
I just realized that I should check mine out since I only had like ~800kms on it since -09.
I think I drive way too little compare how mutch money I spend in it...

Yup you got it right, at the bottom.

Here is a pic of what they looked like after 2500 miles. Judging by how they feel I imagine they look similar to this...

A little experiment:

I bought regular Yamaha sliders. On one side I used the old trick of drilling sort of counter sink holes down them and the other no holes. Then I heat treated both of them with a heat gun 3 times. My goal is to get 750 miles out of a set without any other mods to the skid. (Getting 500 miles now). So I'll see if the heat makes a difference or if the holes do.

I rolled my stock skid across my flat dining room floor and noticed it slid along on the sliders only and the wheels would turn barely, then I installed the the taller X-wheels then rolled the skid across the floor and It just rolled on the wheels only.

...yeah I'm sure they work well. I'm just trying to get thru the season and then decide over the summer what I want to do. I may even swap to another skid altogether.

You could try what is a "stover" type of lock nut. It looks damaged when you look @ it. The nut has been squished to give it the lock. If that doesnt work, look up stage 8 fasters, the bolt will break before the nut backs off. By the way, sled looks great!

I've pulled the skid to make some minor repairs before heading to Montana. So I checked on the slider wear.

I put 340 miles on the sled riding thru some tight twisty trails that were icy coupled with high speed lake crossings. What I found is that both sliders were in pretty good condition considering the conditions. I credit the heat cycles with this. I think this is something I am going to do to every pair from now on.... normally I would have been down to the wear lines within 150 miles in those conditions.

As for the drilled vs not drilled. The ones that had the holes drilled in them actually had 1mm MORE wear. So I won't be drilling holes in them anymore.

Conclusion: Heat cycle = effective / speed holes = ineffective

I began prepping my sled for the mountain trip. I pulled the skid and cleaned bolts then re-loctited them, replaced upper bearings. As I posted before my limiter straps were worn. I ordered some after market ones that were the right length however when they arrived I realized they are the double wide ones that were on the 08s. (single style) The width doesn't seem to be a problem and they are much cheaper then Yamaha ones so one they went....

For some extra fuel I mounted a Kolpin fuel pack jr to the back of my tunnel. The break light had to be removed for it. I don't think the exhaust will melt it, there is a good space.

Blurry pic...

Revster I see you have the oft block of plate. Do you have an under tunnel exhaust or did you just modify the plate to fit the set up you have?
