I just picked up a 2008 Nytro that is having issues with the starter. After searching around this forum it sounds as though I might have sheared bolts in the starter clutch. Right now the starter just spins freely and does not engage at all. We tapped on it with a hammer while turning over and also moved the primary around to make sure something wasn't locked in place. Does anyone know if its possible to pull the stator cover and flywheel with the motor in place for inspection? I read that people had to remove the subframe and tilt the motor to remove the starter itself. I own a 2008 Nytro as well and it looks like I might be able to remove the oil tank and there might be enough room to have a look from the side.

Is it possible the two bolts that hold the starter itself together have come loose and allowed it to reindex itself? If so the starter could turn backwards and therefore not engage the One Way bearing.Common issue on early Phazers. There is a green line and protrusions on the starter that need to be lined up.If not the starter can turn backwards or not run at all.If its not that It would be the one way bearing.

I have done a couple starters and just pulled the subframe and tilt the motor to get it out.The starter was shot inside and needed replacing.

Just to update for others, it turned out to be the 3 bolts sheared holding the starter clutch to the flywheel. Unfortunately I was only able to find 2 of the 3 under the stator cover. It looks like my next step is to tear the oil pan off to find that 3rd.

Nytro Starter clutch issue.
I removed the oil tank, the crankcase cover bolts, but the crankcase cover will not come off all the way. Is like spring loaded. Any ideas how to the cover all the way off? By the way, I found one sheared bold head when I tried to get the cover off, it fell out of the engine while I had the cover pulled out. Not good.
Is there a spring or what holds this cover on? Thanks

Starter clutch issue
Got the cover off, starter clutch has 3 bolts sheared off, only found one head. Will need to pull off the pan. What a pain.
