Hi guys, I completed my Nypex project so far I am thrilled with this machine. Only problem I have is when I start it when its in the shop after sitting for a while it burns oil from the exhaust. I have done all checks and know the turbo seal is bypassing on the exhaust side. I do have a restrictor and it is 28thou in size. My turbo is a mid mount like like an Impulse set up. I am returning the oil by gravity to the stator cover and the line is downward all the way and about 14 inches long. After warm up the problem goes away and seems good all day. I am using a 2860 Garrett. Any ideas would be appreciated. Its not a big deal just looks bad when I start it. Thanx Shad

I have notice the samething with my Impulse header on my RX1. Like you said, drain is down all the way, goes to the same spot. Not sure on my length, but got drain setup from Impulse also. But I have only started my engine up couple times since rebuild, from to bottom with alot of aftermarket parts. But seems to getting better each time. I have a 30thou orfice in the supply line. I used to drain to valve cover with left of center header junk, then went to pto housing for the drain. But that was 1/2 hose. But there is no way can drain to the left side of the sled now. Im running a 2871 thou, still pretty much the same. Sorry I dont have any real good answers thou, will think about it some more.

Mine is doing the same, when you fiqure yours out let me know.

Im gathering parts, appears to have 5/8 drain line or was called #10 line. Found some fittings out of Cali & Ontario. Hopefully will gain interest to get back @ sled, but there is alot of stuff to do on the farm.

Hi Guys,
I've seen this same scenario many times. Some turbo's leak past the seal internally and there is not much you can do about it. You surely are restricting oil with a .025-.030 and a 1/2 inch drain should be good so long as it continues down hill ALL the way, no uphill spots. That be the case it's most likely the turbo. You can look in the charge tube going from the turbo to the intercooler, if there is oil coating the sides of the tube, you will know it's the turbo.
One other possibility would be valve guides and seals are loose, If it were a automotive engine I would lean in that direction, but haven't seen that to be the case with Yamaha engines :flag:

Im not sure the shape of Mr Fusion apex engine, but my RX1 had complete rebuild top to bottom. Im using impulse header, so oil has to drain to magento housing. The drain line that he supplies is 3/8. Once oil has left the turbo its a downward run all the way. I have spoke with Paul, he sugguested that need bigger return. Yes I have the orfice in the supply line. My turbo is also brand new. With left of center turbo setup that I use to have drained to pto cover with 5/8, never any smoke. But sled only smokes when engine is cold. Once its warm & run for abit, clears up. Just looks really bad on $ wasted on engine/sled & smokes like an old beater. Sure hope its not engine or turbo related.

When it comes down to it you really cant have a gravity return line that is too large. My friend has a turbo on a drag bike. His return line is 3/4" and it doesnt have as far to run as we do on our sleds.

Hey RED, same problem here from new engine and new turbo too. Rode it all season like that just kept eye on oil level. Seemed to go away when warm too. Just frustrating thats all, level of pride I guess, I removed my turbo and inserted my earplugs and run engine strait from header and no oil burning at all. I only seem to have oil going to my exhaust side and none in my intake side at all. Was thinking it was a seal problem from new and was going to sent out my cartridge this summer. Shad

The fittings came in from Cali, next is to find some want to work on the sled again. $29 fitting cost over 100bucks to ship, sure dont like dealing with usa companys that wont use the mail system. Oh well, have it know, thinking it should work.

Update, finally got around to getting back to sled. Got fitting on turbo, -10 or 5/8, 90 degree fitting. Put adapter fitting into mag housing, the smaller of the 2 plugs. Problem now is the other 90 degree fitting is going to force the ss braided line into the brake rotor. Does anybody know how long of a return line is too long? Thinking about running oil return to the crankcase breather area. Did this when had cpr kit, worked great. Thanks for any ideas.

Did you buy the complete drain kit from Paul. That's what I used and it worked perfect. You also need an oil restrictor on the inlet side of the oil feed. I believe the spec is .035 from Garrett. If I remember right mine was made from an old Mikuni 127 jet drilled with a number 60 bit which is actually closer to 0.042" but close enough. I made my line as short as possible and I used that yellow Goodyear hose that came from Paul..

Sure did, got the whole turbo drain setup from Paul. Had orfice installed in the pressure line since the org cpr kit back in 05. Paul said to try mobil 1 oil. Turbo is brand new also, smoke goes away once engine is warm. Its kinda hard to sell the sled as it looks bad to me, cant image what somebody wanting to buy it would think. The yellow line is 3/8, but the bango fitting with the small holes arent 3/8's. Pretty sure thats the problem.
