Oil change problem

O.K., start from the top. Drained everything, replaced oil filter, now when you removed the old filter did you make sure the gasket came off as well. check the old filter and make sure that the oring is in it. If not, well back under the sled you go. If nothing is leaking and all checks out, your going to just have to let it warm up and keep checking it. Maybe warm it up, check it, don't add any, run it again and check it again, see if it changes. It shouldn't, when you place the dipstick in, don't just drop it in or flip it around. The sensor on the end will cause a splash back and give you different readings. Main thing once you get the level to stabilize is to add a little at a time. Your not doing all this on a sled lift or with the sled not sitting on it's track and skis are you, Level ground assuming a garage, or barn?

Its sitting on Dollies,The sled is not leaking anywhere,The gasket is off and the new one from the oil filter is on and I put oil around the ring and filled it 1/2 up before I installed it. Why does it matter I am using a different filter then a Yamaha filter?

Ok,I took it off the dollies warmed it up for about 3 mins and shut it off let it sit for about 20 secs and after about dipping it 10 times it seems the oil is dead smack in the middle of the high and the low

O.K. so it's stabilized. Now add a touch at a time until you get in to the top 1/3 of the dip stick. About 4-6 oz first then maybe less after that. You'll get it just have to take your time. As for the filter, as long as it is capable of flowing the required amount it shouldn't damage the engine. Many are vary particular about which filter they use in their engines. I don't know anyone personally who has had a filter failure, but I don't doubt it does happen. I've used just about every brand out there on various trucks and cars and haven't had any problem. Fact is, just like oil, many different brands are made by the same company. If the cross reference is correct I'm sure it will be fine, as stated it will just take a little more oil to fill it, were talking 1-2 oz mabe.

It doesn't matter if you use the Yamaha filter or another make, just do some homework on the other filters and quality of construction. There are a couple posts floating around here that a 'filter' search should find.

I didn't want to put the longer filter on mine because it ends up really close to the skid plate and was worried about crushing the end on a big hit. I'll probably just use it this season seeing as I have the accessory skid plate. Just something else to think about.

I didn't even think about it hitting the oil filter,Hmm now you really have me thinking about that. How could I check that before I do it and I am screwed in the middle of a trail?? I have a stock skid plate

I think I used a straight edge(or level) from the heat exchanger to the front clip. Can't remember what the distance was now but it made me raise an eyebrow. Not too worried about trail riding, it's those little off trail jaunts that are a concern.

Should be able to place a straight edge across the bottom and get an idea of the clearance. Just don't forget that the pan may use some of that space as well. As for the oil level, it's up to you, your in the "safe" zone so if you want to add a little more you can, if not don't. Like I said I usually go for the top third.

The reason you might be getting different oil levels. The manual call for to run it at least 10min before checking the oil level. Also make sure the oil cap is resting against the tank. If your still having a problem than you might want to run the motor and just loosen the oil check plug located on the head and see if you are getting any oil out you should see oil after 10sec.

Just installed a longer filter on mine and I'm not gonna worry clearance issues. If the filter gets damaged there's gonna be way bigger problems than that. Like broken oil pan or front exchanger. IMO

Ditto on the longer filter for the Apex. Dealer said this one is bigger, more cleaning surface after I questioned the part number. After putting it on I realized how close it was. I'm going to remove it before the start of the season. As others said a little flex in the front end or movement in the steering rod bolt and it's punctured. I'll have to bring this up with him next time I pick one up.

I know forums are kinda useful for some, but WTF this thread is so messed up. DIY guys crack me up. :drink: Never knew changing oil was so difficult LMFAO
