oil change without changing filter

its a good idea to change the filter with every oil change, filters are cheap and it makes you look at things when you tear it apart to change the filter, preventative maintenance is a good thing

Scotty (Great Avatar BTW), I agree but it's waaaaaaay too much of a PITA. My biggest complaint about my Attak is the place where the oil filter is located!!!!!!!!

Oil and filter once a season ....its not a huge investment and why not its maintnence unless ur sled sits more during the winter than it does tearing the snow up....plus like the other post says if anything has gone wrong over the season it gives u a good chance to get in there and check things out .....DUH !

I cant seem to find the thread that shows how to change the oil on an apex, I did find it in the faq sticky, but that now shows how to relocate your filter not an oil change. If i changed my filter at the 500 mile oil change do i have to change it at 1936 miles or just the oil itself, im changing the oil cuz its a new year, before you ask why change it at 1900 miles, any help to the oil change link would be great, ty ahead of time for the help

Don't know if you got your original question answered yet.

Under the sled is a plastic cover held in place by 5 (I think) allen head screws. Remoce that. In the middle of that is the oil pan bolt. With a oil change pan inder, remove the bolt (medical gloves work great when removing this bolt to keep all the oil off you so your significant other doesn't complain). Go to the oil tank on the right side, big silver thin next to the brake disk. Remove the bolt at the bottom, then remove the sensor on the top, once that is removed, un screw the dipstick to allow for better flow. Put the bolts back in and fill through the dipstick hole with a funnel. Put dispstick back in and attach the sensor.

Alright -- I just changed my oil and filter yesterday. Grrrrrrrrr. Many, many hours later and 4 beers, i think, I was done. It didn't help our one psycho neighbor (who thinks he an engine genius) saw me working and came over..... He'd never seen a 4 stroke sled engine before and acted like it was the holy grail (which I do completely agree with him on that point!!!). Actually we have some of the coolest neighbors in the world, but this guy is a goof.

He is also apparently a total know it all and he kept giving me tips (i.e., acting like he was an expert of an engine he'd never seen before) and commenting how complex this seemed. Then he started giving me the the names of people who fix sleds. I informed him I could work on my own and finally shoo'd him away so I could actually got back to work..... This is also a guy who has pet ducks, pigeons, and crows.

But anyways, the filter looked brand new even after a year. I really think it did not need to be changed actually. And of course I added some nice Amzoil 0-40 with the brand new Yammi filter... I tell ya, I'm not changing the filter again until I get my hands on an Ulmer's relocate kit..... good thing I got a line on one


I really don't think you have to change them as often as a lot of people do..... Yammi says 12,000 miles and they designed the darn engine. I wouldn't go that long, but every other season or like 5,000 miles would be just fine. It's too much of a PITA for changing something that doesn't need to be changed.

I have never changed oil in an engine without changing the filter.... That being said I have since wised up and learned that a 4 stroke sled does not need the filter changed nearly as often as the oil. These babies turn alot of RPMs so I think its a good idea to change the oil often

My sled sat for 2 seasons so it needed an oil change. It only has 380 miles on it so we changed the oil and replaced it with dyno oil to give the engine more time to "break in" Im gunna wait until I get closer to 2000 miles with the dyno oil in and then change it to syn. Since I will be making the change from dyno to syn I will change the filter then just to try and get as much of the dyno oil out as possible. Once I do that I dont plan on changing the filter until it gets to atleast 6000 miles on the odo. (4000 miles on the filter). I think that will be plenty early enough....
