Does anybody know the easiest way to change the oil filter?
RX-1 Yamaholic and I are going to change the oil before going on our trip next week and I was wondering if anyone might have some good tips.
The mechanic where I bought my Warrior says it's a real pain in the butt.
Is it true or is he just trying to get me to bring it to the shop and charge me an arm and a leg. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.

It's only a pain because you need to take stuff off to get at it and then you'll find that a sumo wrestler installed it.
Take off the airbox, take out the battery, move the battery bracket out of the way (it won't come completely off because a wiring harness runs thru it) and there it is. When you do get it loose, it will drain oil in the bottom of the sled. Keep a shop vac ready to start sucking once you loosen and it should cut down on the mess.

Power do the oil change yourself and save your money it's not that difficult just some time and patience.Remove airbox, disconnect breather tube, remove battery cover and battery, you can remove the battery holder altogether it will make it far easier to get at the filter, you just have to lift it off the frame then underneath the wiring harness. One other important tip when removing the oil filter is to cut a piece of bristol board and place it underneath the filter make sure that the bristol board is long enough to protrude out the bottom of opening where the oil drain cover was, this way when you take the filter off the oil will run onto the bristol board and direct the oil down into the oil catch container, that way there's no mess to clean up.

I'm definitely doing my own oil change. I like your idea with the bristol
board. That should help me keep my Warrior nice and clean. Thanks
for the tip rightarm, I will use it for sure.

According to the manual the right side cover and the bottom panel have to be removed to change the oil. Is that necessary?

Theres a oil drain on the oil resivoir and on the engines sump thats why you need to remove the panels.

One more thing you might want to do, since you already have the side panel off, and the oil tank is empty, is pull the the oil pickup off the bottom of the tank, and wipe the screen clean. It can get pretty loaded up with metal shavings left behind during manufacturing. Only takes about 2 minutes to do, since you have everything all apart.
how do you g et the oil pickup out ? is it on the tank or the bottom of the engine

Go down to your local auto parts store and get an oil filter wrench, bring your new oil filter with you to size it up, the type that a 3/8 socket wrench fits on, if you have a 3/8 breaker bar that will work fine, if not you will need a short 3/8 wobble extension and a ratchet due to clearance issues.
I don't think anybody here was able to loosen that oil filter without a wrench or other means
