just got a call from a friend , his oil filter started leaking after sitting on the trailer for a week.
We changed the oil approx 300 miles before the leak. He said he grabbed the filter and was able to get maybe a quarter turn on it and the leak stopped.

There is no old o ring up there and I put the filter on the same way I do all the sleds with no issues. Until now.

Has anyone seen a filter loosen off before?

Thanks ty

Nope, have never seen a filter loosen when installed tight enough to begin with. They call for 12 ft.lb on the filter. That’s tight for an oil filter!

Last year our 05 vector had oil under it. Took the protector and cover off, and it was seeping around the oil fliter. even though tight. Been on since 2006, as never changed it after initial. Took it off, cleaned it, put it back...all good. Then I put a new one on. No more issues. BUT it really wasn't loose...

Our 05 vector leaked oil around the filter last year. Put a new one on and it's fine. But the old one was still tight...not sure why it was seeping.

I like the o ring better on the k&n then stock filter.

Most all we ever saw issues with yrs ago, were just the ones where guys forgot to make sure old Oring came off, and then it leaked on the new install.

It did it again this morning on start up and then sealed up and stopped leaking I'm trying to get him to pull the filter off and see what the hells going on.

Odd....I would pull it off and see what that Oring looks like....It may just not be seated good? Probably something stupid like that, or maybe a slight bend in metal of the filter housing and allowing a seep.

Just to let you all know. The leak got worse as the trip went on. But wasn't that bad when the sled was up to running temperature. But really bad when cold. Returned home last night this morning removed filter. There was a big bubble in the o-ring.

Always nice to find the problem....;)

That's interesting. I haven't rode my sidewinder at all this year yet, but I have noticed a drop or two of oil over a couple weeks. Checked it out and its also leaking at the filter, I am going to try and tighten it some more and see if that solves the problem, if not I will have to pull it off. I know the old o ring was removed as I still have it on the old filter when I did my oil change in the summer time.

I tried tightening mine before i removed it. Seemed to help the first day. But after 200 miles it was leaking bad again.

Ya I think I’m just going to pull the new filter off and replace it with a K&N filter. It’s a pain to get in there with filter wrench.

I highly recommend the k&n filter with attached NUT to put a 17mm wrench on. I have lots of info and pics in my build thread, its just such a pleasure to work with and I have been using k&n oil filters on all my 4s sleds since way way back.

Stock filter rubber gasket likes to stick to block....

17mm wrench....so easy to install AND remove later.
