I got a shock when I changed my oil filter. It was loose. I have been using oil, but I never saw any evidence of a leak. I can't explain why the oil didn't come out completely. I thought I put it on tightly, but my wrench was not the best. I just purchased a tighter fitting strap wrench, and I can get it tight now. Usually oil filters don't have to be tightened that tight. This could explain why they are so tight from the factory.
Maybe the people that can't explain there oil use, should check out the filter.

Yooper I had a problem where my breather plugged on my warrior on several ocasions even with the slot in the hose. In each case I found the problem when the oil light came on. In all cases the preasure was released thru the oil filter seal. The filter still sealed with normal pressure but was fairly loose when I went to replace it.
Preceeding the problem I had changed the filter and hand tightened only. I feel that a tighter filter would have caused gaskets or seals to blow in other areas. Other people tightened the filter with a wrench and blew oil out the valve gaskets.

misfit,
That's interesting. I don't think I ever had my vent plugged.

Mine plugged at low speeds running on below zero days. I find we slow down when it is really cold out.I didn't know it was plugged until the oil light came on. After this I would inspect the breather periodically and it had a cream colored type foam in the hose. This foam was never present at higher speed running or warmer weather. The foam builds up at slower speeds and eventually plugs.
Dukester routed the coolant line from the carbs. thru the breather line and this stopped the line from plugging completely.

That cream being formed is a mixture of oil and moisture.
The crustys build up anytime it is cold enough... Does not matter on mine if riding slow or fast. Check it every time you fill up! I now have the ecp with the re-route installed and it collects water and a few drops of oil.

Does anyone have a cross reference # for the filter. I would like to get a fram or an equivalant filter and not pay the Yamaha price.

Carquest is 85358. ignore the posts to come that will say to use OEM or the motor will blow up, and it will be noisier than stock. Most auto parts can look it up.

An alternate Oil Filter would be the one from Amsoil. $15 CDN. Apparently, the bypass valve is supposed to be superior to other filters, according to the Amsoil rep.

I don't think I recall anyone ever suggesting that. I *do* use OEM filters, but only because my Yamaha dealer sells them for cheaper than the autoparts store.

What about a fram, or AC. Anyone do it yet??

According to FRAM.COM, its a 6017.

The Fram 6017 is on the shelf at Parts Source for $9.95 Cdn.
I installed one on mine when I changed the oil, before putting it to bed for the summer. It seemed to fit fine, and the dimensions were the same.
The gasket is flat, instead of the round one on the Denso (OEM) filter, but it seemed to seal O.K., at least at an idle.

I'm inclined to believe that the flat ring would seal better. That denso ring always made me nervous.
And BTW: That fram number is an exact x-ref for the specific yamaha part number of the filter.
