There is a guy that I know that may be getting rid of a mid 80's phazer, white, for like 200 bucks, I havent looked at it, but is there anything in particiular on this model to look at or is it just the normal wear items? I figured as long as it doesnt need a track and it runs it would be fun to bomb around on this winter...

Check the throttle for stickiness and fix if there is any at all. Check the brake and brake lights and the chaincase oil level. If it has been sitting for a long time run seafoam and extra oil in the first tank of gas. I would also pick up some new plugs right from the get go.

The phazers are famous for being one of having one of the most durable motors in all of snowmobiling, 19000 original kms on mine without a single problem.
Id check your skidframe for cracks, that seems to be a common occurance on the phazers and exciters iv worked on, check your bogey wheel bearings to make sure none are seized, and your sliders. If you want, you can tighten up the front end using shim kits to correct some of the steering slop, alot of those sleds seem to have this.

On the older Phazers like that you want to look at the tunnel and see if it is buckeling along the sides anywhere. There was a spot up front towards where your feet sit that would start to buckel and also a spot futher back. They were reinforced on the Phazer II models.
You also want to take the handle bars and see if you can freely move them forward or back. There was a spot in the support tube for the steering bars that also was known to crack or break. Also, reinforced on the Phazer II models.
Also, look over the front end bolts and shims and the bolt that holds the ski on and make sure that they don't look like they have too much wear. And, as was said before look over the skid frame for anything that looks cracked or broken.
As far as the engine, unless it was very poorly taken care of that little motor was pretty solid.
