I think it only shuts down if the throttle has not been touched for 2 minutes or something like that. I.e. If you left it idling for over 2 minutes and it was overheating.
Okay, now Im really screwed up. You would think if your sled is running that cool (in the 160-170 range) it would be way to cool to make power. But if this is how this motor was designed to run then fine. What the hell is wrong with my gauge? Its the autometer phatom and is hooked up exactly like it supposed to be. Also the other day I let it idle for about 5 minutes after it had been run for awhile (210 on the gauge) and could not get my freakin light to come on (260 on the gauge). The light blinks at start up so I know it works. Could I just have one of the rare rx1's that never over heat. It has 1400 miles on it and I just switched to mobil one syn oil. No rear heat exchanger either. Thanks for all your comments.

new temp gauge for me
i decided to install a temp gauge this year because last year i had the temp light come on if the trails were to hard packed or if i rode on the street to get to gas. i also installed a rear heat exchange (the small one that fits inplace of the cross over tube, it seems to work very good. i rode all weekend in various conditions and ran anywhere from 155-165.

Actually, 160-170 will make more power (denser air charge, less prone to preignition/knock), but it will not be as 'efficient' as a motor running at 210 (i.e. more hydrocarbons, etc in the exhaust).
Like others have said, check the ground, maybe even contact Autometer and see if they have advice for you.

Better yet, use a mechanical gauge. I use the autometer phantom and works great with operating temps averaging 155-170 depending on the conditions.

Well I just took the turkey thermometer out to the garage and rode the sled around a bit. My aoutmeter said 210, my turkey gauge said 165. Must be a shitty sender. Does any body know what the little # is oh their sender is. Mine says something like 3h25. I dont think it is the correct one.

Mine runs at 160-165 all day on da trails. Runs a tad higher with low snow conditions.

Same here 165-175 pretty much all the time. Althought my temp light will flicker at around the 170 mark almost everytime. No problem with the sled though. Running electric autometer phantom also.
