Has anyone on the forum heard anything about an overdrive clutch for the RX-1. I talked to a dealer that says he goes down a tooth for better low end and they replace the back sheath of your clutch with one of a different angle that gives you an overdrive for better top end. They also replace the clutch springs and do some dialing it in. Supposedly you get the best of both worlds. My friend has one on his with the carb springs and jets redone and he is faster than me in both areas but I am wondering if it has more to do with the carb changes and less with the clutches

Take the back plate off an up-to-date VK540. If you look at your primary, you will see that the belt doesnt reach the top. With the VK540 part, it will. You may need to add weight.

They have worked with this setup I just was wondering if anyone has used it or if it is any good. I would let them do all of the clutch mods. I was stuck between buying a Heavy Hitter and this overdrive thing. I want good speed on trials nice backshifting and I need top end speed I know its hard to get the best of both worlds. Has anyone tried this change was is succsesful was the HH better????

You really want to do the heavy hitters AS WELL.
Take Matt's stupertune stage3 kit. It drops the gearing somewhat, giving more bottom end, but the top end suffers slightly. Overdriving the primary will compensate for this drop in gearing - let you keep the top end with the kit made for bottom end.

Thanks LB I havent had a chance to call him yet but I will. I am kind of nervous dealing with someone so far away but I see alot of you guys have dealt with him and had good luck.

I bought a clutch kit this last week from Matt. I ordered it late last friday and had it on monday. I have called him with questions and always get an immediate response or call back. Seems to be a class act.
So has anyone compare the vk540 sheave against Hauck Power Products speed sheave or I've also heard that some guys have had their stock one machined down? Anyone know what a vk540 sheave is worth? How much mpg's can be gained from this?

I am more worried about dependability and drivability. I want good lower end and a fast top speed I just am not sure how many people have tried this and if it works asa good as they say why isnt everyone on here doing it. It seems like the perfect setup. I am sure there are some drawbacks I am missing.

Has anyone used one of these setups that works better than another. Are there any issues in doing this overdrive thing???

I've tried similar clutch sheaves to what that dealer is offering but on an SX and an SRX, I've also tested with different machined angles on my sheaves only to find, you will have increased belt wear and increased clutch heat for very little gain on both the overdrive and different angled sheaves. Clutch kit's from reliable sources work best!! Don't touch the sheave angle or I'll be telling you I told you so!
In rebuilding a loose clutch, yes tear it appart and begin with machining the sheaves to clean them up, but retain the stock angle, Unless you want to run a different angled belt & secondary to match your primary set up.
Of coarse, that was my waisted time and money but I still enjoyed testing the different theories, maybe someone else had better luck !!

Hi race, yes you must be careful who you deal with,i had a used sheeve that was a max. per. sheeve and was told after i had installed it that it was junk, and the company that told me this was correct, now after a little research i bought and installed the hauck overdrive sheeve,it has the right angles for our belts,i bought it from woodys in topsome, keith dident do the install ,i did it at garys of caribou yamaha dealer, and not touching anything i lost rpms on shift out,now i was informed that the taller gearing you are into needs less weight to make it work, and that is what i have done, now it pulls hard, and i am getting ready to reinstall my 38 bottom again for somemore top end,i am currently running 40/24 gears w/sheeve and cat rear and team sec. for 115 on gps in 2,000 ft. under preety good running patchy snow and ice,but i was only running 9900-10,000 rpms consitently,my sled needs 10,400-10,500 to pull good.

Overdrive
I have tried several overdrive sheaves over the years. First, ihad Brad Hulings put rings on my polaris clutch and that worked well. Then, I bought a Hi Tech OD Sheave for my Vmax-4. While it did allow the belt to ride to the top of the clutch, I lost alot of belts due to excess heat. Never had the problem when I would use the other clutch with stock sheaves. I don't think the angle was right on that sheave and belt slipping produced excess heat. Then I bought the Hauck Speed sheave and have had no heat problems or belt issues with that one. Finally I have the Hauck Billet Clutch which comes with the Speed sheave. This clutch runs cool, as long as you set the secondary up right, and runs the belt to the top. Now for the ? of do they work. To some extent yes they do. They definitely pull the belt all the way to the top, which then puts you into overdrive. This is more than a 1 to 1 ratio. When you exceed the 1 to 1 ratio, you lose efficiecy and don't use the power as well as being below 1 to 1.
Do you gain MPH? Yes, if you gear and clutch properly. The theory is more about being able to gear down to gain acceleration and then maintain top speed. If you gear down to much you can ride the belt to far up and it will flip. Don't machine an OEM sheave, it will weaken it. If you want to do it I would get the Hauck and play wit it. No one thing will make you fast. It is a combination of alot of things together that will put you up front. Except for a TURBO ofcourse.

Hey Beast my buddy got his from Woodys in Topsham too. His RX-1 goes great. The combination of gearing it down I think one tooth and going with the overdrive makes a difference but he also changed carb springs gutted his airbox and jet changes. They called it there Power up kit. I think I am going to go with the ECP kit and have Woodys do the clutching for me. Why did you take yours to the other dealer. Did you have some troubel with Woodys??
