Overheating

Rear heat exchanger, ice scratchers, and a bowie knife to cut snow to put on my running boards every time my idiot light comes on, I'm tired of overheating my RX-1. Considering a radiator setup but doubt it can withstand the brutality. I figure adding a temp gauge so I can run it on the fringe, but can anybody tell me what temperature does the idiot light come on at?

Before you get too upset check the coolant mix. Mine were both very high concentrations from the dealer (excess of 70-80%). It should be 50% for us and maybe 60+% for you during the true winter months. The other thing to check is that you have bled the system correctly. You need to raise the rear end quite a bit and run the motor for a bit then bleed the system. Finally, drill your track and you will drop about 15' in temp. Good luck up there.

Yup, everything Trxster said, especially the coolant mix. I've never had a problem with mine and I'm turbocharged and don't even have a rear cooler.

Man how do you ride a sled up there ? That's some hellaciously cold weather up there . I guess with the right gear you're ok though . Do you live up there year round ? If you're over heating with a rear heat exchanger you've probably got an air lock in the system or it's 100 percent antifreeze - like they said . Unless it's hardpack all the time.

Right on, I'll change my antifreeze. Pretty confident I have all the air out of the system, but I am always finding a little more it seems. I'm still interested in the temperature that the light comes on at though. Some kittycat riders say their setpoints for idiot light are near 165 degrees and leave plenty of room for running red for a while. I doubt Yamaha engineers would allow that much difference, but was wondering....

Back in the 02-03 season I knew the temperature number you are searching for but I haven't had the problem since then so I have forgotten.
I added a temperature gauge, water wetter and bled my system and have not had the overheating problem again.
I did notice when looking under the sled after riding that the coolant crossover tube from one side of the sled to the other crosses where it would on a short track, far forward of the tunnel extension where the snow is deposited by the track. I had wanted to add an extension piece to the coolant lines and run it just inside the rear edge of the tunnel extension (where it would actually do some ggod) but since the other tricks seemed to work I never got around to it.

I heard that Yamaha was suppling and installing auxilary rear coolers in RX1s if they received a complaint regarding "hot feet" or frequent temp light coming on. So I complained and cooler was provided and installed by Yamaha, May this year on my 03Rx1.

have you ever heards of a coolant called "engine ice" i had temp problems in my gsxr1000 when drag racing it..and i switched to engine ice. operating tempature dropped almost 8-10 degree's..and it cooled off a lot quicker than normal coolant,,,even with water wetter in it. could be something to try. i just picked up an 03 last sunday, and i plan on trying it out in the sled.
