I was going over my 2010 XTX this morning and I found a round black cap or plug in the ice under my oil tank. It is about 1 inch diameter and about 5/8" deep made of black plastic. Any ideas what it's for? I'm going riding tomorrow So i hope it's nothing important

does it have threads on it? there is a plug on top of engine on that side that is removed when changing oil to vent the engine so oil will drain out of the engine

No threads. It looks like a plug for the end of an ATV bumper

Best thing would be post a picture but we could list a few spots were plugs are:
-upper right hand side of chaincase
-(2) under gas tank on the tunnel
-(3) under seat on the exhaust shield
-Top ends of the sub frame
If I had to guess with the size you gave it would be for the top ends of the subframe to cap off the tubing.

It's good I checked the oil. It's bigger than the plug for that.

It's the plug for the sub frame tubing. NO issues riding it this weekend... only issue I see would be long term... water getting into the tubing and causing premature rusting, chances are you'll be replacing your sub frame by then ;-)

there is a plug on the front side of the chain case as well as the dip stick

That is a very small plug. This is big and not meant for fluids.

Considering you found it under your oil tank, is it a plug from the magneto rotor cover just behind the oil tank...?

Never thought to look there. I will check before I ride when I check the oil.

Chaincase
I found a plug in the bottom of my also. It eneded up being the fill plug for the chaincase. Can't believe it would come out, but somehow it did...
