I live in upstate NY and snowmobile in Canada about 3 times a year. Does anyone know if you need a passport to cross the border this year? We asked last year when that would be required at the border and they told us 2010. However I have heard a lot of rumors that we will need one this year if we are going travel there.

Wife and I are getting ours right now. Was hoping that maybe they would use a new drivers license or something like that. Last minute rush is going to be a crazy mess.

I really wish they'd agree on a damn date and stick with it, this flip flopping is doing more harm than good. We did ours this past summer to avoid the rush. Took no more than 10 days but it will get bad when the crunch comes.

Homeland Security said:WHTI Land and Sea Transition: Beginning Jan. 31, 2008, DHS plans to begin initial elements of WHTI implementation at land and sea ports of entry by ending the routine practice of accepting oral declarations alone. At that point, U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children in January, whereby children ages 15 and younger would be required to present certified copies of their birth certificates. Groups of U.S. and Canadian children ages 16 through 18, traveling with public or private school groups, religious groups, social or cultural organizations or teams associated with youth athletics organizations would also be able to enter, under adult supervision, with certified copies of their birth certificates.
WHTI Land and Sea: At a date to be determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security, in consultation with the Secretary of State, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The implementation date will be determined based on a number of factors, including the progress of actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security to implement the WHTI requirements and the availability of WHTI compliant documents on both sides of the border. DHS and State expect the date of full WHTI implementation to be in the summer of 2008. The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice.

I recently got back from hunting in Canada. You don't need the passport right now and it is not to get into Canada it is to get back into the US. We were told if driving you will need it June 1, 2008. You are going to need one eventually so might as well get the process started.

I heard mthe same thing......you currently need one now for air and sea travel and come 2008 you will need one to travel by land. but I also heard these dates may not be concrete due to it possibly affecting tourism dollars (this is just rumor). But by the book it says you will need passports for all forms of border crossing come 2008. Get them early as with this change there will be a sever backlog of passport apps. I am assuming you could wait up to 3 months once the apps start going in for land travel requirements.

I was told by a US border guard that they are pushing and trying to get people ready by Jan. 08 but it's not going to happen, he said it was more like June 1 2008..He said that part of the date changes is the Canada is thinking of going to a smart drivers licence and if we do, the States might do it as well....Those were his facts now his OPINION was that passports will not be needed, the governments are liking the idea of the new hack proof smart drivers license.......You should of seen the one guard when he started giving me the story of hurring up and getting my passport.. I told him that I refuse to, once I need a passport to get into the states, my money will being staying in Canada, he did not like that ...I know alot of people feeling the same way ..........

Governor Spitzer put in a plan last week. It was to go into effect when reapplying for your liecence, which is every three years. The big hassel, and fight now is, He wants to give illegal aliens a picture license. That sure sounds like a dumb idea! legalize an illegal? UH? So no passport yet, and I don't think it will go into effect. To much money to be lost?
