The whole "remove the seat and tank" thing comes from a small plug by the header flange that is suppose to be removed to "aid" in oil priming. You crank the engine over until oil comes out of that hole. Also not a bad idea to check the exhaust donuts at the same time. I've installed the copper donuts so I just use a bit of air pressure in the vent port of the oil canister to get it to prime right away.

Thanks for the info. I didnt "prime" with the plug loosened as I didnt see the service manual call for it, it did state to crack that seal so all the oil will drain out during the oil/filter change.
I didn't "prime" mine, do you think I damaged the engine at all? It seemed ok as I let it warm up for about 10 min.

I’ve never primed ever. I think if it was total engine rebuild it would be more important. Thanks for the info. I didnt "prime" with the plug loosened as I didnt see the service manual call for it, it did state to crack that seal so all the oil will drain out during the oil/filter change.

Good point, no valve rattle on startup so I figured she was good to go!

Not much of an issue, It automatically shuts down after around 10 seconds with no/low oil pressure. Residual oil will protect things until it primes on its own IMO, as long as it doesn't take 3 or 4 of the 10 second attempts for it to prime. Before using the Air Pressure trick in the breather hose mine would usually prime during the second attempt.

I went through side by removing one rivet on plastic cowl by suspension on my venture multi purpose. Easy to get filter then. Not sure if same as phaser? I have pictures in multi purpose section. Not sure how to direct or post it here?

With a cap style filter wrench, there isn't room for a ratchet drive. If the filter wrench has a nut welded to it, it will work. I had good luck with a rubber strap wrench. Use on all my sleds. On the Phazer, I split it because it's not that hard to do, but rubber strap wrench works good too. That's exactly how it is meant to be done is through the top. There would be little reason to take the whole airbox out if you could easily drop it out the bottom. The cap style filter wrenches and a socket wrench are the way to get them loosened up and out.
