I've read conflicting posts that the Phazer motor has more incommon with the RX-1 than it does the YZ 250F. Does anyone know for sure? I'd actually feel better about the Phazer motor's longevity if it was based off superbike technology rather than dirt bike tech.
In the mountains and glaciers where I ride, I can hold the thottle wide open for miles when climbing. Because of it's small displacement, I believe the Phazer will need to be held wide open a majority of the time to go anywhere (same case with a 440 or 500 2 stroke sled).
Anyone know if Yamaha is just marketing the Phazer with dirt bike heritage to play upon the concept of light weight? Neither the RX-1 or Apex would allow them to do this.

Phazer motor
It's same bore and stroke as YZF 250cc and not like some of the guys are saying that it's a Apex cut in half.

That is what I have seen as well. I read a post where a guy mentioned one of the turbo companys having a write up about the motor being more of a chopped down Apex than a YZ 250F.

I thought they said it was a chopped down YZF-R1, which DOES have the same bore/stroke.

If you look on the web site the Phazer has the same bore and stroke as a YZ250F. It is not even close to the apex or RX-1 which is a longer stroke engine. Due to the shorter stroke the phazer engine will be able to rev quicker and higher than if it was a long stroke engine based on the RX-1. The phazer is really a new engine built for a snowmobile in that it has EFI and a detonation sensor plus the gear reduction. Should be a fun little engine....

LB,
Do you remember where you saw that?

Its the same bore and stroke as the R1 (I remember because we had an agrument about this earlier) and the stroke is different on the R1 compared to the RX-1/Apex.
So maybe the 250 is based off the R1 so they can say the phazer is based of that.

Okay from the link above it looks like both the YZ250F and the Phazer are all based off the 1999-2003 R1 sport bike with the 77/53.6 bore and stroke.
I'm thinking the Phazer may not have as much motor longevity as the larger Vector, RX1 and Apex. I'm only saying this because I've read in both dirt bike magazines and on dirtrider.net that the new 4-stroke MX bikes are hard on valves and heads when ridden and revved hard over a season of racing.
IMO because the small Phazer will be more easily ridden at WFO I see it being wrung out for power a lot more often causing it to be revved out a lot more than an R1. The YZ250F sees its share of high revs when racing but I don't believe it experiences the sustained high level revs a sled can see when climbing up a mtn or blasting for miles across a lake or in deep powder (at least up here in AK). Dirt bikes see a lot more WFO blasts of the thottle for short distances.
I hope the Phazer motor holds together and I'll be eagerly looking for real world reports this winter. I just have some reservations.

If the engine has stainless valves instead of titanium one Valves wear should be a non issue. I think.

Its defenitely a clone of the YZF 250, according to our Yamaha Service Managers bulletin.
