Same thing happened to me last year, going across lake at 90+ and boom! So I stopped took the shrouds off and 2-3" pieces of belt and cord all over and the bottom plate was folded up underneath the clutch. So the clutches didn't get damaged, thankfully. The upper foot guard above toe bar was bent by the chunks of belt the came off at that speed (that surprised/shook me a little).
I expect belts to blow. Thats why I carry a spare. This belt was new in the beginning of season. It was the end of the season, no problem, new belt. But for those that previously have said to check/replace your belts more often and this won't happen is a bunch of crap (in most cases). I would ask them if they carry a spare belt? If so, and they live by their own advice, then why carry another belt. If they check/replace their belts more often and this doesn't happen then I guess there is no reason for them to carry another belt.
