Update. So I bent it down with a combination of a hammer and rod, crescent wrench and pipe wrench. Not too bad. It was harder than expected though. That belt must have really whacked it hard. New ultimax belt and rocking on!
Interesting note. With the stock belt I was running about 93 mph on the lake and averaging 18 mpg over 600 miles. New ultimax belt from Carlisle and I backed off at 102 mph. 75 miles later I averaged 22 mpg. Wow.

sounds like your old belt was slipping causing heat and failer good thing you had a spare.
