Plugged grease zerk

Thxs. Guys. Knew I could find a better answer!

Remove the problem part and see if you can grease it disassembled and cleaned... If not have it all ground off and a new one welded on for lots less than $240... In a pinch you can just slightly dremmel the ball plug tip off and run a drill bit to clean out the zerk guts and place a plastic grease cap or rubber plug over the end to keep dirt out after greasing...

Thats a good idea! My dad had those caps at his tool and die shop to put over zerks on punch press dies. Maybe even as simple as a little dab of silicone sealer might work too.

Snow checked two 06 Rage's, during 05/06 season almost all the grease zerks leaked. This was a common problem on 06 sleds as per TY. Spring of 06 removed skids, and ground off all welded in zerks. Holes tapped to 1/4" by 28 threads per inch . Carefully ground the new zerk threads shorter. You lose the spring and ball which in this application are not required anyway, at the most you lose a drop or two of grease. The threads are slightly tapered near the hex flange on the zerk. When ground the correct length they will tighten when installed, do not rub shut and do not leak.
Years back there were no zerks on most sled skids. I did all of mine this way.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned that the zerks on our sleds do not have check balls or springs because they are welded on. You could use a small drill bit to clear it. If that doesn't work, dissasembly and cleaning of the arm may be required.

Some have ground off the zerk and welded a nut to allow screwing on a normal zerk.

I didn't know that! I'll have to take a closer look!

Well I didn't say anything cause I though perhaps the Viking was different being heavy duty an all. ha ha ha

Not sure I understand, because they're welded on the spring or ball would melt deform during assembly/welding?

More than likely. Too cheap to weld on a bung instead of the zerk directly to the arm saving 5¢.

Hit it with an electric grease gun last night and opened it up!
