I need to remove teh primary clutch cover but do not have a clutch holding tool. Anyone have a method to remove the cover without the tool? I've thought about the cord in the spark plug hole trick but dont' want to remove teh tank to get to the plugs, so besides that one, anything else?

if its the primary you dont need the tool... pressure on cover and start to back out the bolts. 6 i think

I have found SLP's spring compressing tool indispensable when it comes to working on the primary. But I use heel clicker springs, which have a lot higher spring rates. Some tools are just required for some jobs tho.
But I have taken off primary covers before while still mounted on the sled. Helps to have a buddy to push the cover/ spring in while you quick try to get the first few bolts started.

That's a trick to remove the whole primary. Dropping some rope down the spark plug hole can stop a piston from coming to the top of it's stroke, essentially stopping the ability for the primary to keep on rotating and turning over the engine. Thus you can use the clutch puller.
When I remove the primary, I use a ratchet strap hooked onto one of the clutch tower posts and secure the other end to one of the A arms or ski spindle...stops the primary from rotating.

Never heard that one. Don't think I would be inclined to introduce any foreign materials into my combustion chamber. I'm whacky like that.

X2 on getting someone to hold the cover. Don't forget to line the X up on the cover with the sled. It's on the back side of the cover.

Don't put rope or anything else into the combustion chamber through the spark plug hole!!!!! This technique works for a 2 stroke but your EXPENSIVE Yamaha 4 stroke engine has 5 valves each with small dia. valve stems which are easily bent if a rope or anything else applies pressuer to them from the piston. You run a serious risk of bending the valve stems enough to cause the valves to not seat properly. Very Bad Idea, definitely noy worth the risk!!!

To hold the clutch from turning to take off the cover bolts or the large clutch bolt I can use my old clutch holding tool I bought for my Cat sleds. It is on most Arctic Cat speed shops web sites(D&D,Micro Bellmont) and is safe and will do the job right!

Has a nice writeup under there instructions. If your looking to remove just the front cover. No need to remove the center bolt holding on the clutch. just locate the 6pc 10mm bolts on the cover. Loosen slowly remember the spring is pushing the cover out . Just loosen to the end of threads then put some pressure on the cover to remove the last of the bolts.
