I know this is the wrong side but I knew you guys could help. On my 98 vmax the cord is stuck out. What do I do to repair?

Pull the rewind off either the spring is broken or its just gummed up.

On my 97-SX the spring broke. Fixed it once myself(new spring) it broke halfway through the next season. Then I removed the recoil assembly and had a dealer put a new spring in it and wind it. They told me the rope was too short and put a longer on in as well.

The mechanic told me that with the short rope I was pulling too hard and bottoming the spring out.

That made sense and with the longer rope and new spring never had any more problems.

Had the same problem with my MM700. same solution too, that spring is a tricky little @#$%^ to put back in...

Come on guys, it's not that tough to fix! LaLaLa Oh wait, that's right, I had an AC for years..... Recoil spring never lasted longer than a month at a time, so I have LOTS of practice making my chubby finger do things to that spring that they were never ment to do!

Ditto to both statements above.... It's a pain to fix, so you may just want to have the dealer do it... Probably take them 15 mins. start to finish.

You won't be any good at it until you've put it together wrong like 10 times! DOH! :o|

Are you guys serious? A Recoil Assembly is very easy to fix and it is an opportunity to learn. Worst case, ... take the recoil assembly off, and if you can't figure it out, have the dealer go throught it and then put it back on yourself. Really, these are simple. And yes, those who do not replace the cord when if breaks by the handle, will soon be buying a new spring, due to a short cord over-tensioning the spring.

BTW: I had Arctic Cats for 30 years and only once had to replace a spring. That was on an 1971 Lynx sometime around 1992. If you keep the Dogs and Springs clean and lubed, they last forever. If the Spring's bent end snaps off, heat the end and bend in a new end. You can even do this more than once w/o impacting the spring tension excessively.

I rewound the spring on one of my Phazers, maybe about 6 six times before I got it right. Everyone is right, they are a pain. With any kind of luck it is dirty or jammed. I replaced the rope on the Viper and it wasn't bad, just don't let it unwind.

recoil

i got a brand new one from yamaha complet with rope and handle for less cost than a spring and pully would have cost me from the same dealer. all new and ready to go just bolt it on and go. for my srx. so it was not worth fix in the old one.
