Just got in a minor arguement about the quality of the new RX shock...of course i am bragging about it and i am getting pushback about it being a huge failure point, blah, blah, blah...and not worth the hype its getting. Thoughts?

My thought is that first off, the system has been developed in snocross, the toughest of conditions, and over the past 7 years. Secondly, the shock is HUGE, which is a good indicator that it's up to the task. Third, is weighs about 12-15 pounds less than most other skids, about 20% less unsprung weight. That's HUGE, the suspension works easier, and can react to the terrain much more efficiently. I think that alone is the reason this skid works so well and is getting the great reviews. It has a coil spring, which I'd trust more than a straight spring as far as any breakage potential. If the show blows it's oil or charge, it's no worse than a regular shock blowing. I'd be alot more concerned about those new Fox Floats than I would this system.

"YUP" what the wolfster said.. The MX bikes do real fine with one shock... For years now. MM ;)!

i shipped one of those skids and it was 60lbs on ups scale. if you want to know.

Kren, everyone has their opinion, the best thing in life might upset someone. If you enjoy it, who cares what anyone thinks.

I really was just looking for more data points on the shock...apparently some see that as starting a fight....not the case....I ride a Viper today and looking at the RX as my new sled. I appreciate Wolfie providing some facts...JTSSRX...relax a bit.

And the blah blah blah your getting is from someone who has not ridden one I'm sure, have one ridden one and don't agree with the blah blah blah, this is not a bad skid at all as far as performance goes.

Did you guys read the article in Snow Tech about the development of the monoshock?
As wolfie said, it was used in Yamaha's sno-x sleds and when the factory team was disbanded Yamaha wanted to scrap the design because they were having problems getting it to ride and handle well because it was very finicky to different snow conditions. Yamaha decided to stop the development of it because it didnt have the weight transfer and confidence need for trail riding.
The man who was working for Yamaha on developing the monoshck, Mr. Thomas Imamura, was designed to a different project after Yamaha decided to stop developing the monoshock.
Imamura worked late and came in on weekends trying to develop the monoshock. He ran hundreds of computer simulations and eventually found the right geometry for trail use.
Basically, this suspension was created for sno-x racing and worked very well for Yamaha. It was then in development for about 7 years before it was released.
I think that anyone who would buy an '05 RX-1, and then remove the monoshock rear suspension is foolish. I would challenge anyone who thinks that an M-10, Xpert or any OEM suspension is better than the monoshock to prove why with real world numbers. The only flaw I can see to its design is that it doesnt have grease fittings.
However, I think that for '06 it will have grease fittings.

Hebi,
Good point. I towed one of our brothers in because of an M10 failure, and know of other instances of M10 failures.

As with most anything else mechanical, they'll (Mono, M-10, Expert-X, OEM) break at some point, and require a strict maintenance regiment to prevent breakage.

It seems like a decent design, and it's the kind of innovation "...from ski tip to snowflap" I think we were expecting in the first place. Too bad they stopped at the gas tank, and didn't dust the cob-webs off of it sooner.

4Fighter, you cant bring out all your new stuff in a single year.
If you think about it, its all been very calculated on Yamaha's part.
'03: RX-1
'04: RX Warrior, fine-tune suspension on RX-1
'05: monoshock for RX-1, RS Vector, RS Rage, RS Venture
'06: 4-stroke ditchbanger, 100-hp trail sled???
By making little changes every year, Yamaha keeps people coming back and buying new sleds.
Its smarter from their standpoint doing that than to be like Cat, Doo and Poo where they come out with 20 new sleds and then dont make any changes for 5 years.
You may not like the suspension in your '03, but thats the risk you take when you buy the first year of something.
I think that if you rode an '05 with the monoshock, you would be very pleased with the RX-1.
