Guys, I had my 2008 OHLIN's sent in for a rebuild. I have since mounted them on my 11' Apexes. I called my dealer and the answer I got is not close to correct.
Question: If you own a 2008 Anniversary Apex with the OHLIN's on the front, and if you have never touched the spring pre-load, I need to know how many threads are showing from the top of the top jam nut to the where the last thread is and top of shock begins. In other words, how many threads is stock showing above the top jam nut? If any of you have the service manual, not sure if the manual calls out specifics for the OHLIN shock.
I don't know what stock is and I want to make sure the spring pre-load is set to OEM stock. Please post here or please email me this as soon as possible or email: toizrit@comcast.net
Thanks,

E-mail sent. For others looking, Ohlins specs a 3mm (a smidge under 1/8") spring preload for the 40th shocks with the 2.8KG springs.

Why did you need them rebuilt already, for proper fit to the 2011? All the Ohlins front shocks I have seen last for many years are better than any shock out there. Former 4 time Soo 500 champion from years ago (John Wicht III) raced 5 seasons on a set of Ohlins front shocks on his old Indy Chassis. He told me at a race clinic I attended that he decided to rebuild them JUST BECAUSE and it turned out they were perfect. No loss of gas and no contaminated oil.

I agree as well, that I was not sure if I should rebuild them. Based on my putting them on my new "expensive" 2011 sled, I felt that an once of prevention would not be bad. My Ohlin's had 4000 miles on them. They both had some oil seeping out around the piston. Not extreme, but not what I expected. My wife's Ohlin's from her Apex looked perfect. I ride hard, but was surprised to see the oil leakage. I also was not able to properly adjust the rebound anymore on mine most likely due to the leak? So that is why. They fit the 2011 Apex perfectly.

did you have shock cover on if you didn't you could of nicked the shaft , a good ounce of prevention is to use shock covers.

Good advice. I did not have shock covers on them..... food for thought.

I have heard shock covers just trap dirt and crud and are actually harder on your shocks than leaving them factory? (just what I heard)

Was the oil contaminated or did they have a loss of the nitrogen? Just curious.

From what I remember, this was summer when I had them sent in, the oil appeared to be coming out of the shaft/rod and running a bit down around the shock body. Like you would expect from a shock that is failing.

This mean you loosen the springs all the way then tighten 3mm back up?
