Quiet, no snow ingestion airbox mod. UPDATE ON FIRST POST.

Mike, How did you get the screens in there and what are they made of?

It is the same screens that are in your hood now. Take off your hood and note the screen with two plastic push rivets held to the hood. Had a spare sitting around and cut them out and plastic welded to the nosecone.

It may get a slight bit more snow in the nose, but it does no harm as the filters won't let anything thru. Also notice in the pictures, I have cut holes in the plastic protector nose plate and glued pre-filter material on to let cold air get into the factory inlet behind there. Filter and pre-cleaner from HPE. www.hiperf.com Part# for filters, UP-4229 and pre-cleaners, 201-816. Guys, this was just some stuff that I had kicking around. You could use any filter and pre-cleaner that would not let the snow and dirt in without a problem. The grill material in the nose cone came from a hood grill that I took out of my turbo sled last year. Also plastic welded it in place using a hot screwdriver.
Mike, The "plastic protector nose plate" is this what is under the filters in pic 1317?

Thanks Mike, Do you think I could run (maybe 4-6)some Bullseye in their instead?

Update on the first post. Thought you all would want to know I was just not happy with the drivability of this mod. Gone back to stock box and fuel settings, much better performance.

UPDATE ON THIS MOD AFTER RUNNING AND TESTING IT FOR SOME TIME:

I have since gone back to the stock airbox after seeing some inconstancies with doing any airbox mods. Even adding fuel to try to get back some throttle response, I was just not happy with the running performance and inconsistencies. I believe it was causing issues with the air temp sensor and its compensation factors. Don't know for sure it wasn't also reducing the intake pulsations and loosing lower in the field at different RPM's also. All I know is it does like the stock airbox much better and the consistency is now back to running good in any air temp and condition. Also lost fuel mileage running the mod 11-13.5 MPG. Stock box fuel mileage is back now to 15-16 MPG. Thought I would let you all know. Just did not perform as I had hoped for.

ALSO UPDATE ON THE CARLISLE BELT:

Another waste of money. They wear way to fast like 100 miles fast.
The NEW Yamaha belt 8DN-01 is however a very good belt and dropped my RPM's down back into the powerband and picked my performance up greatly, like to the tune of 4 MPH in 1000 feet over a 8DN-00 belt with 1500 miles on. Very nice belt the new 8DN-01.

mike...not sure why,but my sled with MY OWN DESIGN RAM AIR and revving 11,000 at full shift....I always put in about 2 dollars LESS then my apex buds....riding same trail, and Im leading too!...this is at about 1/4 tank to fill back to full.

ive done this with 3 different guys i ride with....06ER,07RTX,07ER.....mine is also 5mph faster then all theirs.

I couldnt be happier!
Dan

Don't know what to tell you Dan. You are also running a 1" track. That may be why you are 5 MPH faster than the others. Mines happier with the stock box. Makes no sense that the MPG would be down with more air and the mod airbox, but 600 miles with mod box on and 600 miles with stock box on. Also did same day, same condition testing to confirm. Performance and MPG is better with stock box. I did some racing against a sled sled that had over $1200 invested into it with some go fast parts installed including the air box lid mod, and could pull away everytime on stock Attak just geared down to a 23/40. It had just came from a performance shop near me, and owner of the sled was told it was the fastest sled he had done up. The part I like best is pulling away from the 1000 Cats with this same stock Attak. Just wanted to let people know that I just wasn't happy with what had seen with this mod.

SharkAttak,
The 01 is wider by .020 and about 4-5 mm longer.

As for the Airbox mod not performing, I think what is going on is that air intakes pulsate, and this makes the airbox pulse at certain frequencies. By adding openings to the box, these pulsations have been reduced and the fuel and intake charge is being spit out and not recovered back into the intake. Therein lies the reduced mileage and performance in various RPM areas at different throttle openings. So the 2 HP gain at wide open throttle on the dyno wasn't worth it to me in the field due to the reduced performance below peak RPM and lesser throttle openings.

Mike thanks for the update ! My testing also confirms that the XS-805 belt adds no performance gain after 2 miles of use!

First couple of hole shots only it is faster but that goes away very fast as it wears because its so soft !

I thinking that larger suspenion wheels will also
help improve MPG and hy-fax wear ! Yamaha's
research and development in this area has alot to be desired !

There is no reason why they cant make the suspension wear better, roll better, get rid of ice
problem, and lighten them up but build them stronger at the same time !
