RApeX-1 Update

Well its quite a feeling of accomplishement when you put it all together and boom it works.

By this weekend the base should be set and the riding great. Watch out though there is a lot of open water out there.

Well I got 200 miles on her now and boy oh boy! Went through a few issues, 1 weight on the heel clicker II was installed behind the roller button (corrected), the return on the fuel injection rail back to the tank has a foot valve on it to maintain constant rail pressure. I did not know this and had plumbed back through RX-1 abandonded upper stock feed fitting. I had to get the foot valve off the old Apex tank and slot the screw holes to mount it on the location of the abandoned fuel pump pick up location on the RX tank (corrected). Other issues were minor mostly changing the rear weight transfer and dialing in the new Ohlins with the new 13mm sway bar up front to get the skis to want to try to touch the ground.

This thing leaves the line with a bit of aggression, it slides you back on the seat, pulls the bars from your hands and will not set the skis down until you let off or you pass 102mph (which I have not timed yet). I accelerates so fast on hard pack you can't read the speedometer until about 80 to 85mph. I still have not dialed the clutch in properly or even touched the furel accelerator.

I need to get the skis to stay down before I get more aggressive. I am having a hard time understanding ho you guys with turbo's ride these things with 220 or even 300 hp. I rode so hard on Sunday and was having so much fun after getting it rideable that I flat ran out of gas on the trail cause I never new I had gone 150 miles. "When my buddy finally caught up" to me he laughed cause he thought I blew up (Doo Guy) no I told him I got 160 miles out of 8 gals of gas cause when I reset the tank and filled it that was all I had in the shop. With a stick there is still 1" on the bottom of the tank but the new pick up system I built wont get that off the bottom of the tank. 2 gals in and she started right up and finished out the day at an even 200.

I did not want to load up come home. But Tuesday I am going with a large group of guys (10) I have the only Yamaha and only 1 of the guys know I blew a motor but doesn't know I upgraded a bit - this should be fun !!!! :die :jump: :-o

Glad to hear the sled is running grand, got any finished flicks....Might have to put the lady friend on the hood to keep the skis on the ground.... :die :moon:

Man sounds like a runner!!! I got close to 310 miles on this past weekend and you are right, it does give you a feeling of accomplishment after a big project once you get out there and ride. I have a little clutching to do with my track and suspension upgrade, but not much, just waiting on my seat cover from sled solutions so i can put my new seat and bars on.

Lets see the pics with the seat and bars. I have been waiting since the Tuesday before Thanksgiving for my new Skinz seat cover & they still don't know when it will ship.

Just a note - I went out yesterday with some buddies & fried them all without pushing my limits. 1 pro-ex 700, 1 stock RX-1, 1 Attack one Rev 800 and an F7, All were toast by several sled lengths at less than 500 feet. Bad news was I broke the Bender Reaction suspension at the front w arm ahere it bolts to the rails on both sides.

I ordered a replacement today will have it by Friday I hope. was supposed to be in the UP on Friday night.

I'll update with some real lake speed results backed up on GPS.

Well the 4th outing is in the books. 270 miles on Sunday up in Wakefield. Everything finally worked for an entire day without breaking - YEAH ! I still need a bit of work on the rear - limiter strap has to be pulled up - I cant keep the skis on the ground. I shortened them 1 notch, moved the weight rod to min and put 1/4" more spring into the rear shock. At 80 she still pulls both skis 6" until I let off or pass about 108.

The clutching needs just a bit of attention I am engaging at 5400 rpm and she snaps to about 9,800 and then creeps to 10,200. It' s bit of a handfull when she hooks up with both skis well off the ground its hard to read the Tach and not take out a few trees.

Gonna make a few changes tonight to try to keep the front closer to the ground and head back to wakefield in the morning.

Ive got almost 600 miles on the new motor so i guess I'll change the oil & filter also just for luck.

I am hoping this trip I get a chance to fool with the fuel accelerator. I am not sure I can envision what more I can get out of this thing if I pump more fuel into it.

Oh Yeah by the way. I know its the Christmas Season but if you can get up north go. The snow is getting a bit spotty but I rode from 8 AM to 6:30 last night and passed maybe a total of 10 sleds.

trail 1 on the West sode of Goegebic was Awesome, 101 to 13 on the East side of the lake was bad (logging), 8 from Wakefield to Silver City was good. Up to Lake of the Clouds from Silver City was a bit bare. The trail to Mass City & Greenland was perfect.

On the way down I stopped & looked at 77 in Hurley it was a bit rough in town as usual but looked great on the West side through Montreal, Pence & Iron Belt.

with your clutch engaging at 5400 i can see why the skis dont stay on the ground. dont know what you have for clutch setup, but might want to try a lower preload spring to reduce engagement rpm, unless you like it that high. as for the top rpm, shouldent it be up in the 10800 ballpark?, or is it supposed to be lower with the longer stroke. im glad your getting the bugs worked out, and from what your saying the motor is pulling like a monster. keep the shiny side up.

Well I have a Heel Clicker II kit in her and without knowing the actual HP the set up I started with is just a bit off on engagement. The nice thing is with the Heel clicker II weight changes take about 10 mins. to change all 3 on all three arms. I am going to bringer her down a bit on launch. Pat Hauck told me to keep the top end between 10,300 and 10,500 remember shes a stroked 1100 CC Apex motor. Where she is set now I think would be great for lake draging but after 270 miles yesterday on the trails it was a bit much by the end of the day.

So far worth every penny, ounce of sweat and the time I put into it.

The first big trip is in the books. Just came back from 10 days in the UP. 4 days in Houghton covering the north Copper Harbor , Gay, Calumet .......

The first 4 days were spent with the girlfriend, her daughter another friend and his girlfriend. I got plenty of time to work on clutch and suspension dial in and set her about as good as I would want her.

The rest of the trip was spent with 12 friends running out of Walleye Lodge in Bergland. 2 clutched & piped 07 Attacks, 1 stock Apex, 2 stock RX-1's, 1 SRX 700, 2 Polaris 1-700 1-800 both with work done, 2 new Skidoo 600 HO's and 2 Arctic Cat F-7's. What a group ! After 4 days and over 700 miles we finally got everybody together on the lake.

Several guys chickened out but both Attacks, the Apex, one F-7, Skidoo and the Polaris 800 came to the line.

We ran 2 up both directions and the only sled that could stay close at 600 ft was the one Attack but at 1000 ft I freight trained him and was over 15 sled lengths ahead out the other end. In 1000ft I was seeing 123 on the dream meter but I did not run with the GPS because I thought I would be running at the radar runs in Sunday.

Sled Fest was scheduled to kick off on Saturday with radar runs on Sunday Lake in Wakefield on Sunday. Temps went to 40 and it rained all morning causing the runs to be cancelled. OH well it will have to wait till the end of the month.

I now have over 2000 miles on the new motor this season & she is running strong. I hope the snow returns soon
