Rebuilt engine, Initial start, should I be alarmed?

Doing an initial startup on my rebuilt motor. I put two quarts in the engine and two quarts in the oil tank. Removed spark plugs and removed the oil galley screw located at the top mag side of the cylinder head to watch for oil.

Cranked for a solid 30 seconds. No oil showed at the galley hole.

Unscrewed the oil tank fill and looked inside. The oil tank was below the minimum mark before I cranked the engine but is now over full and almost to the top of the tank. The oil pump scavenged most of the two quarts that I put in the engine and pumped it into the oil tank.

Is this what should have happened?
 
Only have a few minutes....you put in too much oil and in the wrong places. If memory serves, the engine takes 3.1 (?) quarts with a new filter. Pour 1/4 - 1/2 into the engine and 2.5 qts. into the tank. Start it and let it run for 10 minutes. Shut off the recheck.

Yes, too much oil. It sounds like the oil pump that is suposed to pull the oil from the oil tank has not been primed. This pump lubricates the engine. Pull the breather hose off of the air box and put your thumb over it to seal it off. Crank your engine and the oil pump should prime. This seems to be happenning a lot on the new Vipers. Been reading a lot in that section on repriming there.
 
Thanks guys. Is the breather the small hose coming up to the bottom of the air box or the larger one that attaches to the side of the air box?
 
It is the larger one that attaches to the side.
 
Thanks to Handy and 4strokelover. Primed fairly quickly. Plugging that hose causes pressure to build in the oil tank and helps to prime the pump if i'm not mistaken.

Is the port on the top mag side of the cylinder head a good place to add an oil pressure gauge?
 
I really don't know about the oil presure gauge location, maybe someone else has done this and can add some insight.
