knock sensors are there for a reason

yea. they are there as a back up incase you get below grade fuel, not as a reason to use below grade fuel. the retarted time that kicks in when the sensor senses a knock cause low fuel efficncey, higher emitions, lower power and increased heat. all of which arent good things.

yamaha says that premium is required but you can use regular fuel and only in really rare occasions where bad fuel is encountered that the knock sensor will detect it,you also lose 2 to 4 hp compared to premium, but we ride trail 90% of the time so hp isnt an issue, and the price of premium is insane here so i'm saving $$ over a 4000 miles season,if i would of had issues in the first season i would of stopped using it but it aint the case, and i'm not the only one who uses regular in his phazer

Never had issues with regular just the reving difference. And you don't need to worry about hp when trail riding. So no one else on premium is reving 12000?

I'm new to the sport as of last year. I thought running premium was very important until my buddy pointed out to me that in the UP a lot of stations wouldn't have premium.
Regular since the second fill up, not enough miles to have much opinion.

I've run regular since day one, 3000 miles never seen the knock sensor activate, 18- 20mpg. I was overreving 12000 + had to add weight to clutch to bring it down to 11600

i run 91 octane around here the premium is cheeper 3c/L cheeper on thursdays( not ssure about other places) its only a few pennies more than regular. i just take the sled up there on thursdays grap a few jerry cans and keep em full.

I've only used regular and I get 23mpg (cdn) on average.
I've been wanting to try premium but no one buys the stuff here so its probably been sitting in the tank for a year!
