According to the service manual you need to remove the engine. I have never changed the stator so I can not give you any insight or tips on if it can be done with the engine in place.
Do you have a service manual?

Hello, not sure where you left off with this?
It is difficult to do, but depending on your abilities, you can replace the stator with the engine in the unit.
removing the front bulk head is the key.
you can reach the allen keys.
it is magnetised, so, you will need to grip it well and pull back the cover.
assuming you have drained all the fluids.
the complete right side oil tank, radiator and battery / ECU will need to be removed.
you will save yourself some time doing it this way.
removing the engine is easier, but would add another 2 hours...
I have done it myself.

Is a post somewhere here when I did mine. No need to remove engine. Is it your stator or Pickup coil that is bad? Just asking since stator itself rarely goes bad.
