Replacing Chain - Gears too?

I have an 06 Apex ER that i bought in the spring with 12,000 miles. I'm going to replace the chain as I don't know how hard those miles were or if it's ever been done. I've also read some posts that say to change the gears at the same time, is this necessary?

On my 07 Apex I replaced the chain at 8,000 miles with the original gears, 12,000 miles on it now and no problems.

In the Apex manual there is procedure for checking your chain for the amount of stretch. If within limits it's still okay. See attached
