I bought a new leftover 07 Apex Gt. I have a problem when you go to shift it into reverse once and a while it wont engage fully. It sounded like it was grinding gears!!! EEEK! The next time you try it, it works fine!!!

Can you adjust the linkage to make sure it fully engages the reverse gear? Im assuming it should be adjustable.

What would be the easiest way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem on my '07 Attak and it was easily fixed with an adjustement to the linkage. Pop off the hood and the right side panel so you can see the reverse linkage, it is right behind the brake caliper. Crack loose the two 10mm jamb nuts on either side, then the adjustment is a splined nut in the middle. I am assuming you want to increase the distance between to two jamb nuts so the throw is longer since it is not fully engaging. Turning clockwise should increase throw and counter c/w decrease throw. One you get it to the right distance/throw, then tighten the 10mm jamb nuts. This might take a few times to get it right. Good luck!

I have the same issue with mine. More often than not it will go into reverse just fine, but every once in a while it will grind like yours. I'll try to adjust the linkage and see if that cures it. It sounds simple enough.

Sounds easy enough. I'll give it a try this weekend. Thanks!

info submitted by turbowoz, thank you turbowoz :D

Adjusting Step 1 - Upper Linkage
Loosen locknuts and set the length between the locknuts to 27 mm
Tighten locknuts

Adjusting Step 2- Rear Lower Linkage
Loosen locknuts
Turn the threaded adjuster to decrease distance between locknuts
until freeplay is removed, then turn threaded adjuster back 1/4 turn.
Tighten locknuts

Adjusting steps as per Yamaha Tech Tips

EEKK! Gears Grinding

I also had this problem with may Apex GT and only heard the gears grind twice (for only a second or 2). Being the perfectionist I tend to be, I pulled the cover off the chaincase to check and see if any damage occured to the gears and I was shocked to see how much ground off. There were metal filings from the gears all over the chaincase. (very small pieces) but visible. Since the bearings in the chaincase have NO seal on the inside and are lubricated by the gear oil, the filings will make their way into the bearings and imagine what happens at W.O.T accross a lake. So I removed all gears and used brake clean to wash out the chaincase, gears and chain then filled up with synthetic 75 -90 gear oil.
This makes me feel much more confident that I will not have any problems with the chaincase this season.

I have to ask -- It's BRAND NEW... Why not take it back to the dealer to adjust and inspect? It's FREE... Then, if there is something really wrong, they can't blame you for screwing it up.

Dealer or NOT

The ordeal I experienced (mentioned above) was after my dealer had adjusted my linkage twice and said that the chaincase was clear of debris.

I hope the technician at your dealer is more professional than mine!

You have to set it exactly at the specified length. Most often it is the rod that is positioned horizontally (versus the vertical rod). If that does not work, check the vertical rod, too.

Regarding having the dealer doing the adjustment: I went that route. After two trips and a couple days of waiting, I set it myself and have not had to fiddle with it since.

I would take it to the dealer that sold it to me, theres only one problem its 250 miles away! I got a helluva deal on this sled, thats why I drove so far to get it. I suppose I could take it to another Yamaha dealer to inspect and adjust the linkage.

sometimes even with perfect adjustment it wont engage...... because the teeth are hitting tooth to tooth and cant engage.

What you do when you feel it is not engaging is put it back in forward, move ahead slightly, then go into reverse again and it will pop right in ;)!

same issue with my o7 attak, dealer also re adjusted but still not correct, messed with it myself & all is good. simple adjustment. i also agree on the move forward comment if you hear it as you are trying to engauge.

Another good thing to do is when shifting back into forward, let the handle go and snap into place. If you follow it with your hand holding on, the sled sometimes has to roll a bit before it drops in gear. If you let go of it and let 'er sanp, it will fall right into place.
