this is a question going out to all the chaincase guru's out there. I took my chanicase apart this weekend to swap out my track and drivers on my 08 MTX. And Yes!!! i joined the broken bolt club. My question is in regard to the shaft that supports the two small gears with the little spring between them which are part of the reverse sub-assembly. the shaft is located just to the left and just above the main large lower gear assembly when facing the chaincase

During disassembly I noticed that I could grab and wiggle this shaft quite a bit. It appears to me that it is held in place by the chain guide but it is not very secure. I realize that the outer end of the shaft is supported by a collar on the inside of the cover when the chaincase cover is installed but it seems like the other end would still be able to wiggle which doesnt seem right to me considering all the torque and speed at which all the moving parts are subjected to while riding

It is normal for one end of this shaft to wiggle around? should i replace the shaft and chain guide. If not is there a way to tighten this up. I would hate to find out i need to replace this after putting it all back together.
Thank you in advance for any information.

I have had mine apart several times and i can not recall that shaft being loose. I will look to see what is causing it to be loose. I can not picture how it is attached.

it is held in by that plate and two bolts holding that plate in. I dont ever remember mine having any play though. It is also held to the cover but it seems like something is loose there? are the bolts in that plate tight? maybe they came loose and it has worn out the hole that it slides in on the inner side of the chain case? I guess I would pull it out and take a look.

The shaft shouldnt be loose, the shaft probably loosened from the plate that it is attached to?

Thanks guys. ;)! It didnt make any sense to me why it would be loose either thats what prompted the question in the first place. I just didnt want to take something apart if I didnt need to.

Both the bolts that hold in the plate/chain guide seem tight to me. I will have to check the torque specs to see if they are within their tolerance. I just put a wrench on them and they felt tight.

rlcofmn you make a good point about it might have loosend up a little initially and wore out the hole it slides through. I will take it apart and see whats going on.

kimoajaj the parts microfiche doesnt indicate very well how that shalft is attachted to the plate which is no big surpirse. it looks like there might be a some sort of set screw or a pin on the plate end of the shaft that might secure it to the back side of the plate somehow. So i am not very clear how it is attached but i have a feeling i will find out shortly

In any case you guys are probobly not that far off to whats going on. I will look into the matter and post what i find out

Thanks

there is a notch in the shaft that the plate goes into, so it just holds the shaft into the inner side of the chaincase. It is my best guess that the hole the shaft goes into is warn. Why????? i dont know. was the small bolt (10mm head) that goes through the outer cover into the shaft in there? when you took off the cover there should have been 2 10 mm head bolts in the cover. If that was missing i could see it wearing out the hole where the shaft goes into. Just a guess.

Good luck, keep us posted. It just really bothers me if the plate was tight what would have caused it to wear like that?

Hey Guys

Bolts were tight. unfortunately I checked one of them and it moved a couple of degrees and broke the head off :o| when i ordered a new one they had an update so they may of had some bad bolts or other issues. I did notice, once i had the plate off that hiolds the shalft in place, it had some grooves in it from the chain hitting it. So i need to replace the plate anyway. Looks like the chian got a little hungry and started chewing on the guide a little so the chian may have been a little loose from the facotry. I never had a reason to check it until now. Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

Had my brother take a look at the shaft, plate, and bulkhead and he didnt feel there was much of an issue. He said its possible that the fit was a little on the loose side from the factory because there did not seem to be any extreme wear on the plate or shaft or the bulkhead besides the marks from the chain itself. he siad once everything was bolted back together and tight there was no real way for the shaft to move and since the shaft doesnt rotate he did not think it posed any problems. He has way more experience with this sort of stuff. He builds high performace off-road race cars and sand buggies for a living so i value his opinion on cases like this

So we will put it all back together and run with it. Thanks guys for your input on this. You wont learn if you dont ask questions
