I want to take my 4 year old son for an occasional ride on the trails. I have bought Toasty Tots handlebars to help keep his hands warm. Although he will be riding in front of me, I'd like to somehow harness/strap him to me to keep him stable (people tell me to be prepared for him to fall asleep). And I am looking for ideas...what have others used?? Thanks.

I had a harness that I bought many years ago. Don't even remember the companies name. Had shoulder and waist straps for your child and you. Kind of like the child carriers where your child is strapped to your chest. They had limited mobility but could move their arms. All of my then younger kids wore that or rode in our Snow Coach. They do get worn out pretty quickly and I've seen many parents riding one handed and struggling to hang on to a sleeping child.

Just googled "protective harness for snowmobiling with children " and got a bunch of hits.

I've been looking on line. Hoping for some first hand experience for a referral of a certain type. Thanks.

they still make them viper_dave. i use a child saftey grip part # 12-123 and have considered getting child harness 12-81993 but all the neices and nephews are getting too big. part of why i like having a foam bar pad in the middle as they usually bop their heads off of it a few times.

I have a real simple one made by Khatadin. It works well. He hates the shoulder straps so I usually leave them really loose. It’s not the chest rigs fault, he’s always hated being restrained. He hated swaddling, and won’t sleep under blankets. Even with the shoulder straps loose it keeps him securely fastened to me. I bought it from my local dealer but it’s on amazon:

I used the child safety harness years ago that kept them behind you, with a foam pad between you with handlebars. It was awesome. She would fall asleep and not fall due to the harness. I also was not going to crush her if I hit the brakes. I don't think they make them anymore.

My girls both rode in front of me holding a handle bar contraption I fabricated. Having them hold the bars worked very well and I could drive as aggressive as is sensible with a child on the sled. I did get stopped in Quebec for a warning that having the child in front was illegal. Lucky no ticket.

Get a harness. He WILL fall asleep! However, when he is 27, he will still fall asleep and ram your sidewinder with your apex he is riding, as you stop for a stop sign.... Lol !
