unplug the connector...use an ohmmeter to take a measurement, if its OL its open and burnt, if its 0 ohm, its shorted....i'm assuming you want to see like 4 or 5 ohm resistance

Its likely toasted element. I just changed one of mine. Be patient installing the element to avoid wrinkles and kinks. I ended up with a couple but next time will be easier. Spray hairspray on top of element, works real nice for lube to slide on grip and when it dries it will be stuck on good. I also ordered black rivets. My new element measured 8 ohms, I checked it before I put it on. Not a real tough job. Scraping the old one off was the toughest part. I also installed new grip, old one had a few bald spots. Grips are cheap. And remember to tip your sled over to dump the old rivet ends out after you remove the grip. Not that it really matters much. I also was advised to make sure the handle is warm to make the element stick better. I did that but not sure it was required.

Hey guys. Just wanted to say thanks! Finally got some time to work on it and as always your expertise came in handy. Quick easy job. I just used a paint scraper to take off the old grips and then some sand paper to clean it up. I love this site!,, thank you.
