So I'm going to try the Yamalube Ring Free Fuel Additive shock treatment in my oil guzzling '04. I bought 2 12oz. bottles at $17.99 each- wow! The bottle says use 2 oz. per gal. of fuel with a minimum of 24 treated gallons for engines 700cc up to 1.6L. My question is do I change the oil after the first 10 gal. tank full or do I wait and change it after I've run 24 gal. of treated fuel thru it ?

How much oil is your 04 RX-1 consuming?
The oil is going to get very dirty (black) quickly with the use of the ring-free additive. The "dirt" is the gummy deposits being dissolved into the oil. I have used the ring-free additive and also the Seafoam additive at 2 ozs per gallon as a regular treatment. I would change the only after a few tanks have been run. The carbon in the oil is not going to hurt anything in the engine. You could change it sooner but IMO you would just be wasting oil/money.
Two important items to stick to: 1. make sure you run the RX-1 on 87 octane only!!! There is no performance to be gained using a higher octane and the higher octane gas leads to a faster buildup of carbon.
2. run the oil level just above the E level on the dipstick. Many have found that filling the oil to the F mark leads to higher oil consumption, more oil consumption leads to more carbon deposits leading to more oil....you get the picture.

My 03 1ton use's about 1 quart to 500 miles and was thinking of trying the ring free stuff, Let me know how you make out. I would like to try running at min oil level but its just doesn't seem right( Bad engineering practice). I found my ( Vac hose from air box to Carbs has a 3 " split in the hose, Could this cauase any issues ? Vacume or breathing? I havent ridden since I replaced, Just curious. Good luck

The hose is Part #21 on the intake list that had the split in it.

The slit in your hose was put there by your dealer as a factory fix to prevent the breather hose from freezing.
In the early days of the 03, guys had their hoses freeze on super cold days and blow the half-moon shaped rubber gasket out on the side of the motor. The slit in the breather hose was the fix.
As for oil usage on 03's and 04's it's common. The fix for that came in 05 with new rings. Ring Free works well but there is no "build up" on the 03's and 04's....they just used alot more oil. I averaged about 1L per 1000 Kms (600 miles) from day 1 on my 2003. Try Ring Free. It worked for my 2005 where I was able to double my miles bewteen top-ups. I run it in my Apex now as preventative.

I use 1 quart for every 200-300 miles. I only run 87 octane gas. I check the oil level at the end of the days' ride. I only add oil when it's below the cross-hatched mark on the dipstick. I've learned from TY that E on the stick means Enough. I've used Seafoam occasionally, but probably not enough per tank of gas.
I've always used Mobil 1 0w-40 or 5w-30. I'm wondering if dinosaur oil would reduce my oil consumption or make it worse ?
Does running these engines hard make a difference with oil consumption?I kinda ride like an old lady. It's hard to get over 70 mph on the trails we have around here. I've never pinned the throttle to the bar for more than a few seconds. Maybe I'm too easy on it.

I have found that the oil consumption increases with the average engine speed. My 03 rx1 uses more oil when I spend a lot of time crusing on long flat trails such as up in Quebec. I always use less when I spend a lot of time riding slow on the tight twisties. On average I use a little less than a quart in 1800 miles. Still enough to bother me. I have all the parts to perform a change out the rings for the 05 rings. The rings used on the 4 cylinder engines have been the same since the 2005 models. I enoy working on sleds as much as I do ridingthem so a rebuild will be a fun warm weather project.

Oh great guess Id better slit the new one! I was wondering should I go to any 5 -30 oil. I have been using Mobile 1 full syn? I have been adding Yamahalube 4s now though. What about a high milage type oil? Scotstr I am pretty close to your consumption. Good info here and Thanks

The high mileage motor oils have additive to soften and swell the material used in the various seals. These oils help with external leaks and leaks through the seals on the valve stems. This oil will not have any effect on oil leakage past the piston rings.
