Ring Free

To everyone (except catman and sgilbert) thank you, I truly appreciate the input.

I bought my RX-1 in 2002 having never seen one and it was my first sled. I've done countless updates and enjoy the machine very much. I never expected miracles form any additives, I was just looking for the sound advice I've always found here. My sled is running and riding great. I'm going to try the additive and ignore the idiots. Have a good night.

Funny how I always see Arctic Cats broken down when I limp by on my 2003 Yamaha. :moon:

It will de-cabon the rings and allow the oil ring to seal better again. Yes you want to change the oil because all that carbon will be in the oil. Try it and you'll see it turn the oil black. I used it on my daughters Saturn that was burning a quart of oil every 300 miles and it improved to 2,000 miles before needing more oil after the treatment ;)!

x2 I agree. Its good stuff.

On the bottle I have here it says to change oil when shocking the engine at the rate of 2 oz per gallon.

Too bad it's so expensive.

like so many, also had a oil gusling saturn. tore it down. fully inspected for ring/piston and cylinder wear. all was as new. lightly honed and replaced rings. used even more oil after. put another 50 or 80 k on it and never got better. I assume it had something to do with the cylinder alloy.

RISOLONE MADE A PRODUCT LIKE THIS FOR YEARS AVAIL, AT AUTO PARTS AND C.T. YOU COULDE TRY AUTO TRANNY FLUID SLOWLY SPRAY IN CARBS TO REMOVE CARBON BUILDUP WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING AT 3000 +RPM

Ring free and seafoam will not correct your oil consumption problem. Many, many owners of 03 and 04 RX-1's have tried both ring free and seafoam without success. Tye only way to solve the oil consumption problem is to replace the piston rings with the 2005 parts. Yamaha updated the construction of the piston rings in 2005 to a higher tension.

This was a problem with the 660 grizzly also. If the engine has been maintained properly there should be no issues with carbon build up unless the engine is worn out. I have been into many of these engines and none of them had a carbon problem. I've tried Ring Free several times and it never magically repaired the engine. The fix is to replace the rings. Ring Free is a Yamalube product so it doesn't surprise me that Yamaha representatives push it. Their the ones that pushed it on me and I was naive enough to believe them.

The thing is this guy is a friend and I trust his opinion; he’s not just trying to sell me something. Turns out he knows all about the ring problems of course. I've been reading off and on for hours about it myself trying to get up to speed. He seems to think the 2003 rings work best when perfectly clean and I tend to agree. I'm going to give it a try. It (ring free) also "claims" to help keep the carbs clean so I'm willing to give it a try just for that reason. I really don't want to get into new rings, but will if I have to. My girlfriend will have to get one first though. Is there any harm in just adding oil? I’ll do the shock treatment, change the oil/filter, and go from there. I have stupid money into this machine and plan to keep it forever. Someday I’ll get a new one, but this one will be around for a long, long time. I only have about 5K on it and didn’t notice the oil consumption until approximately 2k miles ago +/- and that’s consistent with what I’ve been reading about others. Surprisingly some seem to have no issue at all. It’s all good. Thanks for the advice.

PS: I've had two Grizzlys and never noticed the problem. My last one had a ton of hard miles on it, but my newer one has next to none.

PSS: I HATE THIS STINKING NEW FUEL. Never had a problem with any of my numerous machines and now I have trouble with them all. Not having the time to beat the bag out of them doesn't help!!

Come to think of it, I had a jeep many years ago that used allot of oil and I ran the Risoline stuff. It really helped and made the motor run much smoother. It was an oil additive though. I realize there is no such thing as mechanic in a can though!

RingFree will not fix a broken engine but....
It did fix my son's Mazda that was puffing badly for a minute on cold start. So this thing clean good for sure.
As for the 2005 RX, well known... either you put oil in it or you do a ring job.... and it's not free !
