Rockmeister The Destroyer...

Hhahahhaaa about the DVD version.

Glad your leg is ok rrxx-1. ;)!

Not running yet.
Found a crack where my bulkhead was broken last year.
It is cracked right on the edge of the weld, pretty common with welds.
Had to take my battery & steering out to get down to it.

Spent most of the evening cleaning up the aluminum where the crack is.
Will finish cleaning it up & braze it tomorrow.

Most of the rest of the day was spent cleaning up the clutch & chaincase areas.
Finished cleaning the chaincase parts up.
Installed the new bearings & seals in the chaincase.

Will also shift the engine to do a minor adjustment to the clutch alignment.

Heyya Budda! They mean the DRINK a Rockmeister! :drink: lol
Man, that sounds good right now...

Have to be ready for Monday, Nick & I are heading to the UP for a week.
I SOOOOOOOOO can't wait!!!
:jump:

Now don't laugh...

Ok, laugh...

It's funny!
Kinda... lol

Ur not gonna believe this...

So I'm supposed to leave Monday, head to the UP sledding...

I un-knowingly waste hours sunday prepping to braze the bulkhead on my sled, only to have the aluminum brazing rod just bead on the casting. Worthless... :o| :o| :o| Grrrrrrrrrr...

Work the same hours again to clean it up AGAIN.
Use JB Weld, works perfectly...
My first instinct was to use the JB to start with, shoulda followed that...
(Its in a spot that is under compression, should hold up very well and has so far.)

Eats up a day. Wrooowwwrrrrr...

Change oil, filter etc while battery, air box and all that is out.

Re-install battery, air box, tool box, a-arms, skis, etc.
Re-assemble steering linkage, lube all joints.
Check alignment is ok.

Install all new bearings and seals in the chaincase.
(After the great Kalamazoo Seal Hunt of 2010. lol)
Assemble chaincase.
Hmmmmmm...
Missing Thrustwasher...
Look around, nothing...
dammit...
Check parts washer...
Nothing...
Check in BOTTOM of parts washer...
Slide fingers through the muck in bottom of parts washer...
This is FUN! Not...
Nasty...
lmao
No thrustwasher...

Gonna have to wait until monday am when a shop opens to find something...
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Need a Rockmeister... :drink: :drink: :drink:

To be continued..

(It gets better, lots better... lol)

So Monday morning I get up early to get things going.
Have a bunch of emails & stuff to attend to, get that stuff done before the shop down the road opens.

Call around to see if anyone has the thrust washer, no-one does...

Head to House of Honda & Yamaha down the road.
(They don't carry sleds, but they can order parts & have metric stuff.)
They let me hunt through their misc fastener bins.
Find a few washers I think will work in place of the thrust washer.
Appreciate their help! ;)!

Head back to the shop & try out the washers, one fits perfect!
YEAH! LaLaLa

Finish assembling the chaincase.
Assemble the brake etc.
Can't remember exactly how the spacers go on the brake so I print out the fiche & install per the print-out.

Finish assembling the brake.
Install the weightless parking brake from Pioneer.
Works pretty darn slick.
Can definitely recommend it! ;)!

Handle some stuff for work & finally get back to the sled.

Loosen the track.
Un-bolt the skid & pull the skid out to change out all bearings, wheels etc.
When I pull out the skid I find that the rear axle bolts tighten before the axle clamps onto the skid.
It has worn into the skid where it is moving.
This has to be fixed... Grrrrrrrrrrr

Try multiple things, can't find anything that will work except washers that I don't have...
Ok, will have to get in the morning... again... :o|
Keep going on the skid.
Find one of the bolts that hold the bottom end of the front shock is loose again. Dammit... lol
Hunt around & find 2 bolts that are 1/4" shorter so they definitely tighten onto the skid better before they bottom in the rod.
Used a BUNCH of loctite on them and stood on the wrench to tighten them...
Another problem solved.

Remove all wheels from skid.
Open up all the new bearings and fill them entirely with grease. (Couldn't hurt... lol)
Re-install seals.
Remove all the bearings from the wheels and toss in trash.
Clean up bearing holes, snap ring slots, & retainer snap rings.
Install new bearings in all wheels.

When I removed one of the upper bearings, noticed a washer was worn out, added to list for morning.

Did notice one thing.
Still had one Doo wheel in the skid, only replaced it because the rubber was about gone.
This one wheel had outlasted the others many times over.
Turns out that the Doo wheels have covers over the bearings on the inside & outside.
This makes a BIG difference in how long the bearings last because snow & grit cannot get into them nearly as easily!
Considering changing all of them next year to Doo wheels again...

Re-install all wheels on skid, except for back one & one top one.
Need washers for those yet...

Am about worn out for the day.
Head in to eat & get to bed early so I can be up early in the am.
I wanna go sledding!!!

Tuesday get up at 5am, I want this DONE!!!
Wanna go sledding!
Nick has been patiently waiting for me to be there & go riding since Monday...

Check emails, send replies etc.

Head out to fastener place for washers.
Wait in parking lot 20 min until they open...

They have nothing... Grrrrrrrrrrrr

Head to another fastener place, this one is open already.
Ya know how usually one guy is helpful & one is a PIA?
Well... I got the PIA...

Old guy, knows alot, & doesn't wanna do it...
Dammit... :o| :o| :o|

Our conversation goes something like this:
Me: I need some washers that will fit this shaft.
Him: We don't carry shafts.
Me: I don't need the shaft, just flat washers that will fit over it.
Him: What's it for?
Me: A Snowmobile.
Him: We don't carry snowmobile parts.
Me: It doesn't matter what it's on, I just need flat-washers.
Him: We don't have 'em.
Me: You don't have flat washers???
(This is a BIG fastener place!!! They have LOTS of stock!!!)

Him: Well, yes, We have flat washers, but not for snowmobiles.
Me: Forget the snowmobile thing, I just need flat-washers!
(About now, I wanna go postal, but I wanna go sledding more, so I allow him to live...)

Me: Do you have any flat-washers with about a 1" ID?
Him: Maybe. (And he just stands there, looking at me.)
Me: May I see them?
Him: Walks into back room in a huff...
Me: (Trying not to want to kill him too badly, at least I got him to move.)

He comes back.
Shows me a few washers, ID is way too big.
Me: You have any with a smaller ID.
Him: I doubt it.
Me: Can I see them? ( I am REALLY trying to be nicey nice, I just need washers, then he can torment someone else.)
Him: Heads to back room in a huff again...

He comes back with SAEs that are too small ID now.
Him: Told ya.
Me: You have any Metrics? (While seething inside, smiling outside)
Him: Nope.
Me: Are you serious? (Still smiling outside) The whole world is going Metrics!
Him: Well, we have some... But not that size.
Me: What DO you have? (I'm still smiling, this is starting to hurt... Badly...)
Him: Not that.
Me: (I try a different tact.) Ok, this is about 25mm, do you have 25mm ID?
Him: Nope.
Me: What DO you have that is close?
Him: Not 25mm.

(I am REALLY, REALLY trying not to yell at this point, I still need washers & I DID manage to get him to look twice, maybe the 3rd time will be a charm...)

Me: Could you please look & see what you have?
He huffs and opens a book...
Him: We have 24mm. And he just stares at me again...
Me: Could I see them?
Him: They won't fit.
Me: Can always file a bit off the inside to make them fit.
Him: No way! That will take forever!

(I'm thinking; You are exactly correct, as slow as you move, everything probably takes you forever... I don't say it...)

Me: Can I just see them please?
Him: Heads to back room in a huff again...

Me: Looks around for something to whack him over the head with... there are lots of possibilities in this place...
Thinking; I can't be the only one that looked at that pipe bender with those thoughts...

He comes back and throws the washers down on the counter.
He isn't pissed at me or even out of the norm for him, I'm sure.
Just not a happy soul & It's my lucky day to deal with him...

I try them on the shaft, they almost fit! YEAH!
Him: Told ya.
(Thinking he REALLY needs to be intimate with that pipe bender...)

Me: I can file that to size in no time.
Him: (Sarcastically) Good luck.
Me: Will make it work.
Me: Will take 4 of them.
Him: We only have 4. And stares at me.
Me: Great! I will take them.
(As I envision the pipe bender...)

He proceeds to slowly check me out...
I pay & finally get on my way.

By this time it is like 9am, been up for 4 hours & not much accomplished.
Grrrrrrrrrrrr

Drive-thru Micky Ds for breakfast, I'm hungry.

Get back to shop, spend 30 seconds using a rat tail file and the washers fit perfect!
(I try to block out the thought of the pipe bender right now...)
Happy I finally pried washers out of him & getting my skid back together.
WOOHOOO!!!! LaLaLa

Finish bolting skid back together.
Everything looks great!
Wrestle skid into place.
Adjust sled up, down, down, down, up, down, up, up, down, down, down, forward, up, down, forward, back, up, up, down, back, STOP!
All the while climbing up and down on the concrete.
Climb up off concrete again...
Install front bolts.

Now back bolts:
Adjust sled up, down, down, down, up, down, up, up, down, down, down, forward, up, down, forward, back, up, up, down, back, STOP!
All the while climbing up and down on the concrete more...
Install back bolts.
Torque all bolts.
Lay on concrete again to grease skid.
Start pumping...
3 pumps...
Then nothing... Dammit...
Out of grease...

Climb up off concrete floor again.
Open grease gun, throw away old cartridge.
Install new cartridge (Always fun).
Lay back down on concrete floor.
Finish greasing skid.
Climb back up. (This is getting old. lol)
Grease rest of sled while I am at it.
Climb back down on floor, pull drain plug for oil.
(I have full access to drains, filter, etc now, good time to do it.)
Let drain, don't even bother to climb up again, I just lay there, I'm sore...

While laying there, I see the sway bar lying under the sled.
Grrrrrrrr More todo...

Re-install drain plug.
Re-install access plate.

Climb back up & find skid plate.
Put a jack under skid plate to hold it in place for me.
Climb back down on the floor to install skid plate fasteners.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....
Forgot wrench...
Climb back up again.
(Thinking I need the washer dude & the pipe bender, make HIM climb up and down on the concrete floor hundreds of times, give him something to be really grumpy about... lol)

Find wrench.
Climb back down & install skid plate fasteners on bottom.
Climb back up.
Damnn, I'm sore...

Install skid plate fasteners on front.
Look at stupid sway bar... lol
Only way I can see getting the end on by myself is laying on the floor again.
Consider finding the washer guy...
Nope, would involve the cops & I wanna go riding...

Climb back down on the concrete floor.
(I'm starting to hate concrete...)
So I lay on my back with my hands above my head, one hand on each end of the sway bar and tap the link onto the sway bar with a dead blow mallet.
It goes well.
However, I have to climb back up again...

Adjust track alignment & tension.
Torque axle bolts.
Torque stop nuts on adjusters.

Hmmmmmmm...
Getting pretty close!
Look around, install a few odd things.
Double-check all bolts on front end & steering.

Install side panels.
Climb back down to install lower fasteners...
Climb back up...
Climb back down & install lower fasteners on other side.
(Did I mention that I hate concrete?)
Climb back up.

Install clutch cover.
Install air cleaner.
Look sled over, looks pretty good! :drink:

Think I am ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :drink: :drink: :drink:

Looks around sled at tools all over... Rats...
Start cleaning up tools.
One of my guys shows up & offers to help.
Cool! If you can do this, I will install my new HIDs!
Works out great, 40 minutes later have HIDs!

Load up sleds in trailer.

Almost on the ROAD!

I think... lol

To be continued...
It gets better... again...
LMAO

HA HA HA... that guy kills me.. Id a killed that parts guy for sure..

Good thing the season is about over.. Need a stress reliever

Head into the house to get my stuff packed & in the car so I can leave.
Check my emails, get an express mail order, has to be into post office before 5pm.
Check my watch, don't have enough time to print, pack load car & then head to post office.
So I print the label package it & drive to post office & drop off.
Head back to house & finish packing.
Load up car & drive away.

YESSSSSS!!!!
I AM ON THE ROAD!!!!!
Heading up the interstate.

Nick isn't gonna believe it... lol

Get into Michigan about an hour away...

Now don't laugh...
Ok, you can laugh... a little...

All of a sudden...
My fuel computer indicates my mileage is dropping, and dropping fast...

Pull off the nearest exit and into a parking lot.
Climb out of my car and look at the trailer...
It is a tail dragger...
Dammit... :o| :o| :o|

Look under the trailer...
Tires are rubbing the floor of the trailer...
Supporting cross members for axle broke...
This can't be!!! #$%&* #$%&* #$%&* #$%&* #$%&*

K, who do I know in Coldwater, MI?
Think of MIViper a TY member.
Call him & explain what's going on.

Ask if he knew anyone that can weld aluminum, or at least if he could bring some blocks to hold the support away from the frame, so I can drop off at his house or something....
Need a jack & a prybar also.
Todd says he will take care of it.
Cool...

So I'm sitting in a parking lot, in my car, in Michigan....
Can't go anywhere, but my sleds are fine.

Don't pay too much attention while a trucker pulls in.

Sitting here thinking, "What the he77 else could go wrong???"
Not a good idea, that thought...
Was just about to find out...

After sitting there for a few minutes, the trucker starts to back up...
Straight towards my car!!!
Dammit... lol

I lay on my horn...
Nothing...

He speeds up...
In reverse...
Towards me...

It is getting pretty obvious, that if I don't act fast, I won't have a CAR EITHER!!!

So I go to start my car quick...
Grrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnd!!!
Dammit...
Already running...
(Stop laughing... lol)

Put it in reverse quick & move my butt outta the way...
The very large truck misses me...

This soooooooo can't be happening...
Maybe I somehow pissed off the snow gods?... :o| :o| :o|

While the trucker is trying to run me down, I am giving Nick the bad news about the trailer...
He isn't very happy...

So I talk with Superman, he tries to find a portable welding outfit near Coldwater on the internet....
No luck...

Ya know, I kinda have faith in Karma...
Bad ones tend to eventually get what they deserve & ya hope being decent, it will come back to you also...
Sitting there, am wondering about all that...
lol

As I'm sitting there contemplating finding a virgin & making a sacrifice...

Todd pulls up...

He has a 2 place covered trailer like mine behind him.
Me: What's that for?
Todd: Figured we could pull your sleds off your trailer & put them on mine.
Me: Ok (Sounds like a good idea)
Todd: Then we will put your trailer behind my truck.
Me: Ok... (Kinda confused...)
Todd: Then you can get back on the road.
Me: Huh???
(I'm lost...)

Todd basically wouldn't take no for an answer as far as me taking his trailer & continuing north on my trip.

He took care of my trailer, and lent me his for 2 weeks.
Honestly don't know how much better my day could have gotten at that point!
(And not about to question it either!!!)
So less than 2 hours into a trailer breakdown, I am back on the road thanks to a TY member!!!!
Specifically MIViper!!!
:rocks:

We get things all switched around and am back on the interstate.
WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!
Thanks Todd!!!
:jump:

Call Nick, let him know I am heading north again...
Not sure he believes me...

I drink ALOT of Cappuccino on the way up...
Musta looked like a crackhead snowmobiler by the time I got there...
Pull in about 5am or so...
Have been up over 24 hours now...
Nick is just getting up...

Tell him to let me sleep 5-6 hours, will be ready to ride then...
I crash...

Nick is good about letting me sleep for 5 hours & I am up when he shows back up.
Get moving and head out on the trail.
YEAH!

We get a few miles away & I have no brakes...

No way...

Look under the hood & find the brake rotor is off center & rubbing, so now it's super hot...
Let it cool & head back to switch the spacers around.
(Turns out the parts fiche isn't right, I just copied it & didn't pay close attention...)

We get back to the hotel & don't have a snap ring tool.
We make it work with a few screwdrivers and 4 hands. lol
Get the snap ring off & re-assemble brake with spacers in so that the rotor is centered properly.

Think we are good to go...

Head back down the trail, everything works great!!!
Alright!!!

We ride the next couple days & hook up with other riders, Mike, Kevin, & Scott(maybe Scott). lol
Have a blast!
Trails around Gwinn are in great shape.
We ride up to Big Bay, all is well except for right in town, is mostly mud.

Friday morning, I get a call from Swamp Monster.
He starts telling me about their own trials & tribulations.

They have had about the same luck as myself & are now in Munising, he is going to have to get a rental sled to ride.
What's wrong with your Apex? I ask.

Turns out something caught the track inside the skid & cut the track all the way around.
Is almost 2 tracks now!

Tell him not to worry, Nick & I are heading that way soon, & I have the Rage in my trailer.
(Well... Todd's trailer... lol)

Refused to take no for an answer & made him ride my Rage.

We ride Friday & have a blast!
Made the Haywire grade, 413, Trail 7 loop.
Is good except for some thin spots way down south.

Saturday we hooked up with Kevin, Jeff, Austin, & others & ride the area around Grand Marais.
Have a blast!

Swamp Monster, Bad Santa & others headed towards Ishpeming.

As we are heading back towards the Beartrap, I hear something in my skid go "TINK!"
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Check it out at the Beartrap...
Broke the right rail right where the front arm bolts onto the rail.
Talk to a few others, apparently it is pretty common on the Doo skids.
Take the bus to Munising & pick up my Trailer.
Head back to Beartrap, pick up sled.
Back to hotel.

(Luckily, when my bearing failed, & when my rail broke, I was on the last ride heading back to the hotel. Not all bad...)

Trying to figure out how I can keep from hauling my sleds all the way back home again to fix it...
Turns out Buddah2 (Another TY member!) knows someone that can fix it.
Waaaaay Cool! :rocks:

He offers to drop it off & get it taken care of for me this week!
You sure? I ask.
Yep! He says.

Thank you VERY much Buddah2!!!
:jump:

So I leave my trailer/sleds with Buddah2 & head to Yamadog1's.
Stop at Yamadog1's & wire in a StartAlert for him.
We talk for a while & I head home, have a long drive yet.

Can't wait for the TY Demo Ride!
We may be puddle jumping, yet will be fun no matter what!!! LaLaLa

Rock :-o

Ok...

NOW you can laugh... lol

that friggin guy in the store is exactly what its like here all the time. that same lazy useless a hole will complain about the economy. happy to see those places fold, called survival of the fitest. people like that should starve as nature intended. I would think work force would get better with slow times, but not the case. My wife knows how I am and when in stores like that she jets before I lay them out cold

Lol, I thought about it, but I REALLY needed the washers...
