Arrived in Old Forge for the 8:30 am departure from Yamaha trailer, temperature was 0. Besides me there were two other guys, one guy never showed up(his loss). We were greeted by Scott and Kirk from the Yamaha factory. All of us were on the new sleds and Kirk was on a 2010 Apex LTX we would swap out on for comparison. We hit the trails and the hand warmers definitely worked. Wind protection was good. Steering was effortless and I experienced no inside ski lift. Skis are a new design and a couple of the sleds had a different spindle rubber to provide more shimming at the back of the ski. I personally didn't notice the difference in steering effort but the other guys said they could. The 2010 Apex LTX definitely turned harder, it had stock skis with Woody's duallys. After lunch at Stillwater Inn we went across reservoir. I had it to the bar and saw just a touch over 10,000 rpm, speedo just went over 100 mph. Indications were lower than what I saw on my Apex last week here but maybe new speedo is more accurate. Sled was fast enough, that's for sure and throttle response is crisp.
Looking the sled over I noticed RA cable seems to be made with a heavier gauge metal outer sheath so maybe it will be less prone to breaking. Air box is redesigned and appears smaller. Bottom access cover for oil drain plug is much smaller than Apex or RX-1, more like the Vector or RS Nytro. Big enough for a filter to be located there too. Although I could see four header pipes at front of tunnel I'm going to stick my neck out and say I think this is a 3 cylinder. If it turns out to be a 4 it is not the same one the current sleds have been using.
As we arrived back to the trailer several Yamaha riders came by and made a U turn to check out the new rides. They all tested the steering and the lady in the crowd said WOW, I can do it with one hand!
We only ended up riding about 50 miles and the trails were icy in a lot of the corners so I didn't really get to put the true cornering capability of the sled to the test. All in all it was a great experience and I thank Yamaha for the opportunity.

Have any of the Yamaha reps mentioned any other model refinements or upgrades or is it just this Apex/Vector/4cyl no maybe its a 3cyl machine?

Geez Dave, You are sure lucky to get to do the test ride! Can't wait to see these in person, I'm still ver y intrigued by the EPS.

I can't believe it. I was supposed to be up there this week and canceled due to the warming weather. What an idiot.
Hey Boomer, where did you send that reply from? It says Sun. Jan 24th? It's still Saturday. You in Greenland or something? Just kidding.

this looks goooood to me,just a nice refinement with the looks cuz the apex style is the nicest in the biz,you dont mess with that, cant wait to try 1 out, unfortunatly,we rarely have a chance to try future sleds here in north ontario

Reps were asked what other lineup changes there might be coming. All they could say is look at past Yamaha history. To me this means the top end model gets updated, then the other models seem to follow. For all I know maybe the body style we rode isn't even what's coming out in a few weeks. Maybe it is just a test bed for the steering and motor to get rider feedback. Most of the focus seemed to be on how we liked the performance and steering.

Can't wait to try the new sled's power steering and refined suspension. I personally think they put the 1052 watercraft motor in the new sled. More grunt down low, about 10hp on top and revs a little lower than our current Apex motor. If the new speedometer is correct like the Nytro 100mph on this new sled = about 114mph on our current sleds. Hope the sled is at least 20lbs lighter too....

Wouldn,t it be nice if the demo trailer would suprise us by dropping in for the giveaway ride in two weeks. Would be LOTS of test riders there for sure.

I'm starting to think that its not a new apex but actually more newer vector style possibly.. I'm thinking that because judging by the shocks I can see it seems it has lower grade shocks then apex's typically dont come with, but instead look the same as the newer vectors have on them. I may be wrong, but its a guess.
Also I thought it was funny every older yami there in the pics has black c&a skis lol! Maybe the new skis were c&a designed. (the need c&a for sure here)
But also the sled to me seems to be more used for them to have people test the skis, steering, motor more then an actual model release. But we wont really know until 9 more days, lol!
Overall I think yamaha listened. People complain over handling, skis, steering effort, power etc.. It seems to me they refined all of that from what I'm hearing.

The demo ride....
Is is just one new model?
A 2011 Apex?
Are there a lot of different " prototypes?"
Did they bring anything other than what everyone is posting?
A new chassis?
A new motor?
Maybe something for 2012 ? 2013 ?
