Hello All; I am considering installing a lower engagement primary clutch spring on my 09 Venture GT. I have seen threads for various products (Schmitt Bros.,Ulmer,Barn of Parts). Also considering a lower preload Yamaha spring with a similar spring rate. To all that have done this mod, what did you like or dislike about the change, and which would you suggest. Thanks for any replies-saltr.

I love it...I purchased mine from Ulmer Racing.

I did the spring last fall and find it wonderful. Love the engagement change to a much smoother rate. I purchased mine from Ulmer Racing.

Barn of parts spring in my 14 LTX. Love it and no changes in performance, gas mileage or anything else....and at $26 the price is right!

Installed a Schmidt Bros. Comfort Clutch Kit in my 05 Vector two seasons ago. It's OK but expensive ($150?) and for $26 for a spring from Barn of Parts that does the same thing, it's a no brainer.

Thanks All for the replies!

I changed to a Y-P-Y spring in my rs nytro. It dropped engagement from 3600rpm to around 3300rpm. Smoother take offs. Nice upgrade for $24.

I kept hearing you needed to do the rollers and the spring.
I dropped in the Y-P-Y Spring, 90501-581L5-00, left the rollers as is and couldn't be happier. I'll have to double check but I believe I lost more than 300 RPM, I'm thinking it was dropped from 4000 down to ~3300.

I ended up installing a Blue-Pink-Blue Spring at the recommendation of my dealer which has the same pre-load but much less rate than my stock spring.Engagement went from 3300 to 3000, with a little quicker upshift, and wide open shift rpm stayed the same at 8500. Much better sled to ride at slow speeds, especially on and off the trailer.

I went with the Schmidt Brothers kit and could not be happier. It included the shorter spring (by 1 inch) and the 14.5 mm rollers. The OEM clutch setup had an engagement between 3800 and 4000 rpm. With the new kit the primary is engaging 2500 to 2800 rpm. Yes it dropped about 1000 rpm. This makes slow speed manueverability through tight woodsy sections sooo much nicer. I don't have measured data to support it but the mid range pull also feels stronger from the stock clutch setup. I cannot understand why the clutch does not come setup like this from the factory. I feel it was money well spent and would strongly recommend it.

Sounds like you got an even better result than I did. I may have to consider it. Thanks-saltr

What is you full shift out RPM? I put in the Spring and rollers and the engagement is very low but my shift out is almost 9000 rpm's and will slowly fall back to @8500. I changed the helix to a 51-43 but that dropped peak rpm to low (7800) out of the hole. I wish I had a strait 45 degree to try vs the stock 43

My wide open throttle shift rpm is 8500, with cleaned and dry lubed clutch weight bolts and rollers. Only change I did was the primary clutch spring to B-P-B. Engagement is at 2900.
