I've been messing around with my suspension on my 08 Nytro, and I was wondering how much of an improvement front shocks off an 09 Nytro RTX SE would be over the standard GYTR clicker shocks I have on my 08 Nytro? This spring I was planning on sending my fronts out for a rebuild and re-valve by Hygear, but an opportunity came up to get a pair of floats off an 09 RTX SE. I'm wondering if it is worth it to swap to the Fox shocks or stick with what I have. Currently my rear setup is stock with a revolve and re-spring by Hygear.

I have an RTX with the Fox and I'm not impressed with the ride of the air spring.I think that for trail riding the coil us a better choice. If I could justify the cost, I have my eye on the Elkas. Stick with the GYTRs if you have them.

Thanks. I too looked into Elka's or Custom Axis shocks but spending over a grand is a tough thing to justify. My previous sled was an MXZX sno cross model and I liked being able hit the rough stuff hard or get the sled up in the air without worrying about the suspension being able to handle it. Unfortunately it just wasn't a very convenient trail ride when you wanted it to be.

That's kind of the trade-off. I love the rough stuff and off-trail riding too, but to be honest, 99% is on trail.

I think the floats are an acquired taste. My last sled was the same. MXZ-X beefed up to a sno cross chassis and I worried about nothing. I have the floats now on my 09 RTX and the rougher the trail the better they work. I keep 52psi in them and I have never bottomed them out. If it were me I would go for the SE shocked if they were a good price. I see you are from MI too so you know how washed out the trail can be on a Saturday night.

The 2009 rtx se came with the Fox Float X air shocks which have compression and rebound clickers for fine tuning. They are a good shock for aggressive rough trail riding and can be upgraded to EVOLs or similarly upgraded with Hygear's Dual Pressure reservoirs. I think you can get a plusher ride out of a good set of coil overs but if I could get the Fox Float X shocks at a good price I wouldn't pass them up.

I wasn't overly impressed with my stock GYTR's but then again living in MN where the trails are rough 70% of the season I didn't really get a good chance to see how they felt on smooth trails. I upgraded to the Fox Evols and they have been a lot more compliant in rough stuff.

I would say send your gytr shocks to hygear. They have the triple rate springs to get them sprung right, and right ride height. They will valve and rebuild them the way they should have come from factory also. I had them do my rear and love them. I bought axis for front. floats don't impress me much if it's not a washed out trail. It takes a lot to make them work. But if you could get a full set cheap it would be worth looking into I suppose. But feel the hygear setup is what will impress you most for your money.

Hygear revalve/spring on the gytr's are amazing. You can just pound through the rough stuff with ease. The others I ride with joke with me that the rougher the trail gets, the faster I go.

to bring this back to life. I trail ride mostly but i end up riding rough stuff 75% of the weekend. With the RTX SE floats do they soak up the 8-12" bumps that can last for miles on end on the straightaways? Assuming 50ish psi with the evol chamber it should have good behavior on the good trails too. On the oil end the adjustable piggybacks w/ comp and rebound adjustment is good for a wide range of riding?

I had a 2010 RTX SE with the same shocks and found they worked great. For me they worked good with the rebound set 8-10 clicks turned in from fully opened. When the trails got really rough I would just increase compression.

Its either grabbing RTX se shocks or buy newer fox 3 evols and have them revalved for my application.

If anyone is interested I have a set of Ohlins I would sell that I ran on my Nytro, they are compression adjustable only but works great. They are way too short to run on my Viper. Send me a PM if you are interested and I will send you pics and dimensions.
