hey guys a buddy of mine brought his apex over and I changed the oil, greased it and went over it for to make sure its ready to go for this weekend(our first ride of the year) and he was saying how bad it rides i rode around the feild and it does seem to ride kinda rough. What kinda kinda adjustments are there for the RTX skid? its a 2009 RTX

not a bad pic huh? lol

I've always been curious as to why I see so many complaints about the '07 RTX rear skid. I ride the MA SAM trails into VAST and found the skid absorbs its fair share of punishment with decent comfort (even while stock) Recently had front spring changed and rear shock revaled by Bruce Schrader (Pioneer Perf). Bruce mentioned to set rear transfer rods with a gap of 25-30mm while sitting on machine. I also set my Fox floats to 62lbs, with a 13mm sway bar. Sled handles and rides awesome now.

Well...there is the spring preload in the front and the back to control ride hieght/ski pressure. The main adjustment is the compression adjustment screw on the reservoir of the rear shock-clockwise=stiffer/less likely to bottom out, counter clockwise=softer/more likely to bottom out. The other adjustment is the weight transfer which are the nuts on the rods in the back area of the suspension. The higher the nuts are, the less weight will get go on the track however this also makes it more coupled-meaning that the front and rear of the skid have to move more in unison rather than independently, making for a more comfortable ride (less of a second kick on bumps). Adjusting the rods down will allow for more transfer and hookup however the skid will become less coupled (which is more fun for standup style riding however is more of a harsh ride).
If the 09 is anything like my 07 was then that sled can be adjusted to be really plush (if the compression adjustment is backed out allot). However because of Yamaha's terrible valve stacks it will most likely bottom out HARD when the trails get bumpy. I used to hate the way that mine rode but after getting mine re-valved I love it.

You have the heaviest springs available in the stock 09, its bigger than the previous years. I'm about 230 and mine was lucky if it sagged a 1/2" with me on it at the softest spring setting and max tranfer! The valving in the rear is very firm, I've changed the springs to 07 springs and revalved the rear shocks to Rex"s multi stack and it has made a world of difference. Lowered the front shocks to 50lb.and added canisters and 13mm. The pilots completed the package as the stockers are with only 3" of carbide are greatly lacking. Very happy with the handling and ride now. Have fun.

I made a few adjustments for him which should make a big difference. I guess when he bought it last year he didnt do a thing to anything except put 192 studs in it. The screw was on the softest setting along with the "blocks" that the nuts are on in the back of the skid. the fox floats were at 70psi. I lowered the psi to 50 to make the a arms level with the ground and setup the rear to where it feels good to me. He hasnt rode it yet but it made a huge difference. After tinkering with his apex it kinda makes me want to get one lol. I love working on these sleds. Good thing about yamaha's is you work on them because you want ot not because you have to lol
