Do the factory (optional) running board stiffener/traction bracket really help for traction .

Unless they changed the design from 03 ,they dont help with traction
they do stiffen the running boards though. I agree they don't add much new traction, but they don't hurt your running board traction. I also added snoslips running board edge traction which I highly recommend.

Rox sled treads! Get them from Rich Motorsports! I am 270lb without gear, and I can hop on 1 side and see no flex in the running board, and grip is great.
