running studs up the center

2007 Yamaha apex gt and 2012 Yamaha apex xtx
thinking of putting 118 studs up the middle on my new apex xtx. just enough for safety. I have been told you should stay away from studding directly right in the center of the track, you should go 2 or 3 inches to the left or right of the middle. I plan on doing, that but just wondering how close to the track window can I get with the double backers, I want to slightly stagger the pattern to get more sctratch lines. anyone studded on of these new 144 tracks in the middle, any information would be helpful
 
I use an accu track patern for mine it wors great for the stagger

can anyone tell me if I install 1.325 woodys grandmaster studs on a 2012 yamaha xtx do I still need to install hyfax on the tunnel protectors or shim the tunnel protectors. I think it should have enough clearance and not hit the exup unit but want to make sure before I order and install the studs.

I know of two 2011 Apex XTX that ran 1.325" studs up the middle with no problems. I have a 2011 Apex 128", different story, on the 128" you need to watch what your doing as there is little clearance between the track and tunnel protectors.

thanks for the info, look like district 13 has snow and groomers are out, might be worth the 15 hour drive from ottawa, check ontario conditions might be an early start to the season.
 
My stud pattern meets in the center with two studs as close to each other as is allowed by the backers touching each other.

The only downside to having studs in the center of the track is that the heads will rub on the rear eyelet of the shock as shown.

After seeing the wear on the shock eyelet I added the anti-rub kit from Ulmer Racing as shown.

as above... stay away of the direct 1" centre of track(because of shock).. on the outside (towards track windows) i try to keep backers edge no closer than 1/2" this makes stud head about 3/4"-1" from side of track..

clear as mud?

I've studded dozen's of track in this mannor..... and they all have had very good luck and traction..
 
I added the anti-rub kit (two bearings and a longer bolt) after I noticed the problem. Had I put the anti-rub kit on right away my shock would not have experienced the wear shown.

The disadvantage to avoiding the center of the track with the studs is that you will have less lines of traction. The more area you cover the better.

As you can see in my pictures I also have two alternating stud positions on the outside edges for the same reason. I have 6000 hard miles on the track with no pull outs.
