Rusty Rear Suspension Arms Update!!!

There is no way they will warranty some rust on the welds. So back to the question - is anyone else going to treat and touch up the rust spots? Any other suggestions short of removing the skid and getting it powder coated.

You will never get all the rust without sand blasting so you will be defeating the purpose. I also believe if you only touch-up the existing rust, more of the improperly treated welds will loose their paint as well. Your better off removing the suspension arms and doing it right.

I had a sx-r a 2001... with a big bore kit...ported etc
after the three year warranty in the fouth year...the crank was out 7 thous.....
I bitched for a good three weeks....
they gave me a new crank...not reman...new...

bottom line...squeaky wheel gets grease...and power in numbers...like the numbers of us here on TY...
not to mention the possibility of a "class' action suit....bottom line...if anyone wants something warrantied on here....talk to me and I will help guide you..

Rusty old skid frame!

Well, my sled is at the dealer and is undergoing a weld-up of the leaking zerks and refinishing of the front & rear arms. We'll see what it looks like when I get it back-hopefully soon so I can summerize it!!

I'm not sure if this is all covered under warranty or if the dealer is taking some of the hit.

AND, they said they were going to replace those idler wheels since they were showing signs of being toast.

People can't even get hand warmers to work well. I hihly doubt bitching is going to get you a warrenty on rusty welds.

"It's a good thing they have a good motor, because I'm starting to believe they have the same problems as all the other manufacture"

Not sure what "other" manufacturers you refer to, but the Polaris sleds I had previously never had a problem with the paint flaking off on the skid, the track didn't rub on any parts of the skid frame, and I never had to replace an idler wheel! Maybe just lucky?

Just seems that for what these sleds cost, we shouldn't have to deal with these problem, as small as they may seem. I've got better thing to do than prep & repaint stuff that should easily have lasted more than it has.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the sled, just frustrating to have to deal with this stuff that shouldn't be happening. If I abused it that would be one thing, but that is definately not the case!

This is what i've been saying for a while now and I think finally enough people are having little issue's with there sleds that they are getting tired of this small nick nack crap . For the money we spend on these sleds they shouldn't be having these little problems.... PERIOD! Also if we do experience some issue's yamaha should jump to solve the consumers issue's instead of denying everything or blowing everyone off! Everyone on here use's the example of Doo'd motor's blowing up and Poo's cranks breaking but atleast they back there customers and take care of the issue's they have! I was quite impressed with friends of mine and the warranty services they both recieved from polaris and Skidoo! MUCH, MUCH beter than anything yamaha has showed me! This information is getting around also, people are talking in the nukmbers now about yamaha's little problems and starting to question the dependability of there sleds. COME ON YAMAHA, have some pride in your products and take care of your customers........ this is really sad ! As time goes on more and more things are popping up that are showing there lack of engineering or design or poor workmanship. There are so many of us with older Yamaha's that has gobs of miles on them and NO problems. Yet we spend between ten and twelve "THOUSAND" dollars and have to worry about all these little problems ? :o|

I have over 2300 miles on my Attak and there is almost no rust on the suspension arms, although I do have a little bit of paint chiped away at some of the welds. I do tend to rinse off the suspension after each major ride, maybe this helps keep them newer looking?

That arm on my sled is ok also, its the other arm in front of that one that has the chipped paint and rust.

Update-no more rusty arms, new POLARIS wheels

Picked up my sled last night from the dealer-they installed new Polaris idler wheels (part#1543018) I thought they looked like Poo wheels & the part# confirms it! At least I know these will last and have replaceable bearings-may even be a it larger diameter to lessen in hyfax wear.

They also welded up the grease zerks, prepped the "silver" suspension parts and repainted them-not sure what quality the paint is as Yamaha wouldn't let them send them out to a "professional" paint shop.

Now to wait until fall for the next trip to the dealer for the hand warmer upgrade.

Was this all warranty work?

Actionjack asked "Was this all warranty work? "

Yes, didn't cost me anything.

Not quite sure how they cover(under warranty) using the Polaris idler wheels but I won't complain as long as they work.

Bodacious
My point exactly, if the missing paint from the suspension arms is from flexing of the arms then why aren’t yours rusted like mine. Yours were properly prepped prior to painting that is why.

Mine are not near perfect by any means. If the suspension would have been black in color from new, then I would not even had noticed anything abnormal. The silver color really can make the flaws show thru. Our local road commission for the past 4-5 years have been using a very......... strong salt/cloride solution to aid in snow/ice removal from the roads. Thats why after almost every ride I come back from, I rinse off the entire suspension front and rear. Obsviously the Yamaha loyalists must be noticing some change in the product to have this great concern. But if you are thinking that Yamaha will step up to the plate and change out the arms because of paint issues.... I guess I would'nt hold my breath for that. The 06' Attak I have is a pretty well built unit IMO.... not anywhere near perfect mind you, but at least equal too or maybe even a bit better than what the competion has to offer. Is trying to stay only as good as what the others build OK?....... no... not if that means you let the workmanship slide south.

There is no way Yamaha is going to warranty the suspension due to rusting. The reason I started this post is to inform those who think the rust is from the paint peeling caused by flexing of the metal from the stress put on the suspension. My point is that if this problem is caused from metal flexing then why aren’t all the sleds experiencing the same thing. Simply because some welds were prepped properly and some were not. Look at your suspension compared to mine....huge difference. I only have 1065 miles on mine and you have 2300 on yours. If it was metal flex yours would be twice as bad as mine.
