getting the boots lined up can be tricky... Helps to spray a little silicone lube inside the boots, and also feel from the inside if the carbs are fully engaged. (its easy to have the top of the boot over the carb, but the bottom lip slips above.)

Michael f, please fill out your location info. Breather box boots also go on easier if you warm it up in your house first as well. The whole unit sort of pops into place when positioned onto the carbs properly.

thanks for the replies, I have tried the lube with no success so I will try warming it up ,
so 1/2''over carbs is normal?

The rubber boots push onto the carbs about 1/2" or so and you will not be able to push them on any further as they will push against the bodies of the carbs. You should be able to visually verify this fairly easily from the top, or looking through the air breather with the cover off at the carb intakes. There is only a small amount of play with the air box when installing. Align the rubber boots with the carbs first, while pushing down at the rear of the airbox and towards the carbs to seat the rubber boots, the front of the airbox will suddenly drop into place if you have done it right. You didn't put in a new battery or something to prevent the airbox from seating?

yea that's what im doing but it just seems tighter when I push down on the front and then pops up, there's nothing touching underneath but that is what it feels like, thanks

Glad it all worked out, will be much easier the next time.

Take a screwdriver and wedge it between the rails on top of the rack and pry back so you tilt the carbs up as you are pushing the box on. Same concept as pulling up with the string, but easier. Make sure the boots are tight on the other side of the carbs or you will pull them off.

I pull the carb rack up with a string and tie it. Then put the air box in place then release the string and voila.

I keep the front of the air box elevated slightly and just reach through each carb boot, from the air box side, with my fingers and press around the inside circumfrence of the boot where it attaches to the carb and they pop right on. If I don't do this I have the same issue you are having. The bottom does'nt seat on the carb and when I press the front of the box to seat it in it's position, either the top pops off or the bottom of the boot gets squished and won't seal.
