I have a new seat cover for my machine. I got it on warranty with my 03 but never had them install it. It is an 04 cover. I am talking my seat off and will get them to add foam similar to the 05. I am talking it to a place that Ihave used before to get motorcycle seats re-done.

How much will I get them to add?? I was thinking of about 4" or so.

Is there a particular type of foam I should be requesting ???

Thanks in advance

i had about 3 inches added to my seat(03). the seat is now flat from tank to the back, and is comfortable. make sure they use a fairly firm foam that will not take a "set" or sag after some use. if they have done seats before, then they will know what foam to use. after that install a 2 inch riser, pivot the handlebars forward and your good to go.

I was probably out to lunch when I said 4". I just want it similar to the 05 seat. Rode my buddys 05 this winter and quite a difference in seat comfort. Maybe an 1" or 2" to the 04 seat might do it ????

I would go with Grader's approach myself. I have an 05 and did the riser. It was a big improvement in handling. Once you do that, you will realize the need for the "Apex" seat height. It just makes the sled more comfortable, better handling, and easier to stand when the bumps make that wise.

I like that idea..With the 2" riser do your hands stay warm or does it put them out in the wind ????

Red RX1... Do you have those wind deflectors on the bars. Do they work. I would hate to have cold hands.

2 or 3" should be plenty then. Not the cheapest route, but installing the Nytro seat made the sled 100% better in the ergo dept.

If you haven't done this already you might try Ron's Upholstery on Nain Avenue.(In the strip mall across from Costco.) They did my '03. As I had to work with the '03 seat cover I only had 1 1/2 -- 2 inches of foam added. It helped. Make sure you have foam added right up to the tank cover and down the sides at the front there. Makes it much more comfortable when crowding the tank and hanging off the sides. With the newer seat cover you have (which should accommodate more foam) you can probably go more. I would consider an inch of foam similar to the somewhat hard foam that is on that seat now and then another 2 to 3 inches of slightly softer foam over that. Don't forget that all foam gets harder when cold and it isn't cold now.

I rode an apex for a weekend and the temp didnt get above 0F durring the day and dropped below -35F at night all weekend (not that rare for where I live). I had a $200 pair of gloves on and hand warmers on high and my hands froze. I loved the handling and most everything about the sled but when I get one Im gunna order some nice big hand guards with it because I cant stand having the back of my hands stinging all day and night.

Snow Mad...Interesting you said to try Ron's on Nairn. I took the seat to him over a week ago. He has done work for me in the past on motorcycle seats. Does great work.

Swiss Sleder...I would like to add 2" risers but have concerns about cold hands and the fact that the cover will probably not fit and I trailer quite a bit. When you put 1" on did you cover still fit ????

Thanks guys.

Yep, the cover easily fits over the 1" riser on my 05 RX-1. You can always go with a set of muffs/gauntlets on the really cold days if you are worried about your hands.

Thanks....I will likely put at least one inch riser. Does the 1" actually help.

Yes, it was much better as the handlebars no longer hit my knees on tight turns. I also felt it provided more leverage to turn. I only went with a 1" riser because I was concerned about cable length. You could probably get away with 2" and might be better given your height.

I installed the Yamaha 1" riser. You might want to look into the adjustable risers from aftermarket companies like Rox because it would give you height flexibility without having to install new parts.
