I had my dealer add shims on my secondary so that the belt would sit higher, I since then changed the belt for a new one and it squeals like crazy on idle, even after 150 miles.

I want to remove the shims, can anyone tell me is I just need to remove the center bolt, or do I have to take the entire pulley apart ?

Just take out the bolt from the shaft and on the back you have three little bolts with washers under them that you'll need to change.

Yup, he probably added too many washers and now with the new belt it's too tight. Did your old belt squeal at all, even if you let it idle after riding it for a bit?

Sometimes they won't squeal it the shop when cold, but if they're just a bit too tight, they will when you ride for 20-miles then stop and idle, just cause the belts warm and grabbing more.

My old belt did not squeal at all, NEVER.

The new one is unbearable, screams loud at idle until it grabs.

yeah the new belt is wider and will sit higher in secondary, making it tighter and squeel.

I have two sets of washers here....I use stock(1mm) washers for new belt...then when it wears down abit,I put in the thicker washers to get worn belt back to top....

but you need to remember when you add new belt to go back to original yammie washers.

DO you think this could be my issue with hitting the rev limiter when I ride? I have the stock belt with 850 miles, and I try not to ride very slow.....! My belt is now sitting just below the top of my secondary, and I'm wondering if my clutch kit and lack of Scotch Brite service on my clutches in a while has anything to do with it. I have not tried shimming my secondary yet.

Probably not, unless your sheaves are dirty enough that they're causing the belt to slip on top. Shimming the secondary will not help your top-end RPMs.

What kind of conditions were you riding in at the time?

Nate...

what are you revving?...I dont think youll hit limiter till 11,200 or higher...i have revved 11,200 when clutching different setups and didnt hit any limiter...

I always keep my belts LEVEL with top of secondary..this works well IMO...I start with NEW BELT and stock 1mm shims...after about 200-300 miles or so Ill stick in my home depot washers which are closer to 1.5mm thick...this brings worn belt back to top...after that is worn,i buy a new belt..

If you read manual it has some good info on how low into secondary it should be limited to set....also has the wear margins of belts....I cant see letting belt wear to the limit minimum they say is acceptable in manual, but if you choose to let it go that long..you would need more shims for sure to keep a much more worn belt at top.

also,if you overevv you can check for belt GLAZE..this ive seen alot with yammies ,some belts get glazed alot...If you stick a new belt in your rpms should lower abit...but if they lower alot then your old belt may have been badly glazed.
