I use quality oil and change every year (about 2500-3500 miles) But Im indecisive about when to change the oil. If you change in the spring you get all the acids, carbon, and junk out of your motor before it is stored, sounds good... BUT If you change your oil in the spring your sled sits and sits and sits. All the while its sitting the temp goes up and down up and down, constantly... every day and every night, sometimes more than others. In an engine this will cause condensation, condensation that, when formed on the inside of the oil tank or motor, ends up in the oil.. so now I have a choice...
A... Change it in the spring so the engine has good fresh oil in it for storage and ride it on watered down, oil that has been in the motor for 6-8 months OR....
B... Change it in the fall so the engine has good, fresh oil for riding and store it with crappy used oil in it....
I have always changed it in the fall.
I figure since I may need to start it in the summer to move it or take it in for service or run it across the lawn when we get the first frost in the fall or whatever. I may not be able to get the engine up to proper temp so any time I do this during the summer Im polluteing the oil. Therefor, Im only polluteing old oil that will be changed before I hit the trails. Then when it comes time to run the snot out of it at 10,800 RPM. I know I have fresh, clean, oil installed....
