Shoot out on OTIS Reservior,. what a day!!

Hi Pete: GGG in the primary and RED/BLACK in the TEAM. The 2 clutches work together so they need to be set-up that way. My heel clickers were set at 5.0gr heel, 3.5 middle, -0- tip. I set it this way to be as close to Ride Blue's set up as possible. His TEAM had 46-38 "F" helix so that screwed things up. Mine is 58-38 .46 progression. He put on the stock secondary for the rest of the day. My hole shot was on par to my other set up, but top top speed suffered by 4-5 MPH. Later that day I went back to 5.0 heel, -0- middle, 3.5 tip and gained the 4-5 mph back without losing the low end or mid range.
When this whole thing started, it was a friendly challenge to take Regular Guys RX-1 and compare simple clutching work to the filter kits (with clutching to make use of any extra power gained). Any other mods throw a monkey wrench into the equation. This is so Joe Snowmobiler can make simple and easy changes (in his garage) based on conditions and where he intends to ride and be confident in the set-up. The sled can always be brought back to stock when it comes time to sell it.
I will dispute what was said earlier. First, anyone who know Dave B. and his set up's know that they are as far from being a "stock sled" with just clutching. His was far from stock with just filters (HAUCK FILTER KIT) and clutching. His sled must be removed from the equation.
The fastest sled after 1,000 ft - mile + run was NOT the filtered sleds, and not even close in mid range. What was being reported was what "they wanted to report".
The mistake I made was not setting up the event in a more formal manner and keeping everyones feet to the fire. We can do it again!!!
Look..... if the dyno shows more HP, and you can work that power to the track, then the sled must go better. No question from that point of view.
I just didn't see it happen last Sunday and neither did anyone else who was there.

Thats funny otis that was what i was running in mine when i had my hc set up same heel weight,and when i took tip weight off i lost top end,but w/mine and my team it would rip tp 1,600 and past 1/4 mile drop off to just 10,000 not what i exspected to happen,and i have the g/black team spring rates are sorry black-green rates 140-220 now you are w/a red-black you said right,those rates are 140-240and you are using a 38 finish wow my rpms would be around 9800 i think,i only have one spring to try it came out of my boys prox700 03 and it is an 1" taller than ours free length,and black w/red strype,what the hell i may as well give it a try,now did you adjust your tps yet,and any more from it.Power that is.
 
Not to interject but I wanted to point out a few things. Any sled that was there that didnt have ample traction (chisels, ice picks...etc) I guarantee was spinning for a majority of the run. Heres a quick no BS account of my Mach Z with and without chisels on bare ice 3 years ago.

2000 Ft Trail Studs = 114.9 MPH
2000 Ft 240 Chisels= 121.6 MPH

If you hook up at the beginning of the radar run, you have that full 2000 ft to gain MPH. If you dont, you spin, then hook up (which in some cases will suck the belt down in the secondary causing under rev) eventually but not after youve pissed away 500 feet worth of accelleration. I guess where Im going with this is I could take a stock RX1 with Zero Mods and full chisels and beat 95 percent of the guys where attended your informal race. TRACTION IS EVERYTHING on ice, without it, forgetaboutit. It only gets better after your traction is addressed with the additon of proper clutching, freddies filters...etc. I dont care how much power you have, if you dont hook up, your done. To do a real comparison, you would all need the same traction, like mentioned above. Then add clutching, filters...etc and go from there. Just my $.02

Sounds like you guys had a good time. Wish I lived close and had that many guys who turned out for an event like that...BBY
 
Just to put into comparison on what everyone is saying on the trail studs vs chisels I'll throw this out there.

The first year that the Viper came out I had mine setup to run the river with chisels & the ride height lowered as well. We had a 01 SRX in our group that was dynoed at 145 hp (my viper put up 127) and in a straight line all out race it would take the SRX a full mile to over come the traction that the Viper had & jumped out ahead with! Get an rx-1 setup with 1/2 chisels to do your comparison and try it over, you'll be amazed!
 
BBY..........I couldn't agree more on the hook up.
My 1999 Mach Z was the same way. That is why Dave B.'s took everyone in 2000lft. Studding. It was the roll on's where the it evened out the odds for everyone. I would jump 2-3 sleds and stay there. Again it's all clutching! The TEAM secondary transfers more hp more efficiently to the track. The few HP you gain on a dyno won't make any difference if you can't transfer that power to the track. It's combined clutching!
Now it makes sense if you could take this extra HP (filters) and get it to the ground through better clutching, then you've most likely "nailed it".
With all the bantering on which size jets, air screw position, needle position, and now needle design, then add clutching, to jump 2 sleds on a stock RX-1, then you really have to ask if all this is worth it? Yes, it's fun sometimes. But's it nowhere near the "bolt on" that most guys are expecting.

Here is what I am prepared to do for the good of the site. I am also from MA. fitchburg, leominster area and will travel any direction(in MA) for this to happen. We can use my sled for a baseline. I have the stage 2 kit from the Speedshop (Matt) and have Freddie's kit on the way. I will not put Freddie's kit in when I get it (would prefer if someone who knew what they were doing put it in anyways) and will run against any set up (as long as it is just normal studs). We can then install the kit and will run the same sleds after the kit is installed and we can then compare results before and after. I work weekends but will donate 8 hours of sicktime to make this happen, or we can do it on a wed, thurs (my days off). Also have a camp NE of St. Johnsbury VT. but getting up there will be more difficult
 
You will definetely spin in a roll on race and anyone with a proper studding still has the advantage especially when the other sleds have clutching, filters...etc which create more track HP (spin)...BBY

Exactly!!! This is getting blown way out of proportion. There can be no
comparison made between OTIS RX sled and any other sled there as
he was the only one other than Dave B who had chisels on their RX1
Also for the record there is nothing in terms of tuning that needs to
be played with to make power with the filters. I have not changed
anything other than going from 165s to 175s for jets because I felt
I was running a little lean. The radar gun confirmed this and showed
113 from previous best of 109 same day. This is with 23-38 gearing
and I am certain that I could have posted at least 116+ with stock
24-38 gearing. All in all it was a fun day, met some good people, did
some testing and tuning, found 4 MPH and learned not to go to the
lake without CHISELS :!: :!: :!:
