Engine first occasionally had slight miss immediately after hitting the throttle hard. Eventually it would continually stumble and die intermittantly losing all electric. Finally it wont run, no power at all. No lights, nothing. This happened over 30 miles. My heated visor is connected directly to the battery and worked fine while my buddy towed me home about 6 miles. Was late when I got it home so havent checked anything yet. I have warranty but am wondering if there are simple things to look for before I have to haul it 90 miles to the closest Yamaha dealer?

Wasn't there a post about wire harness rubbing right on front of sled, under the relay box I believe? Something to check

Maybe the stator is toast. Charge the battery up and see if it runs ok.
Sounds like a no-charge problem.

All good comments - definitely its the electronics.

I place a piece of rubber under the bank of relays in the noise to keep the wires from rubbing on the rivet heads. Good place to start.

I woke up this morning thinking about possible rub thru there. I have seen the post and glued a piece of naugahyde under there maybe a couple weeks ago, but everything looked fine at that time
I have decided even though my:
rear spring is rubbing on shock resi,
the little rubber dampers near the tip of the rails are getting knocked off,
relay rod is banging on the pivot arm ( I think this is what they are called)
signs of premature wear on drivers,
idler wheels are out of round and bearings are starting to fail,
belts have a hard time lasting more than 300 miles,
decals are getting wore off,
the Dzus screws holding the hood on are a serious pain in the butt to latch,
and they closed down the local Yamaha dealer,
I am going to remain positive and not bad mouth this wonderful piece of engineering.
My guess is I have stator issues. However, it's only a guess.
Instead of sledding on my day off today, I will likely be hauling this to the next town where I do not have a relationship with the dealer.
Happy trails everyone

Good luck! I get the frustration! 200 miles for me and my SW getting a new engine with no ETA in sight therefore ending my season and one of the BEST snow years in my area ever. Not happy with Yamaha at all on this. They don't stock long blocks, and make my dealer order every part and assemble on site with guys that have never assembled a 998 motor before. I proper solution is to have a engine shipped within a week drop it in and allow me to break it in before summer. Alas they don't 'owe' me anything and I should thank my lucky stars they are covering it under warranty. Meanwhile the $15K paper weight runs out of warranty while waiting and by the time its ready the grass will be green. Bitter much...

Jeez and that's on an LE edition!?

Tell me good things about it please haha

Where in Sask are you?

Check your battery connections. Just happened to me last Sunday. Got back from a 120 mile ride, backed up
to the shop door and shut it off. Went to restart, just a click from the solenoid, and the dash went black. Tried again and got the same. Dragged it in the shop thinking relays froze up as we had been in loose powder all day. Pulled the seat, turned the key, same click, same black dash. Checked for loose wires at the solenoid....all tight....but loose connections at the battery. Tightend them up, and so far so good......

I live in North west. Meadow Lake. XTX LE yes. I will get it in my garage and snoop around. Look for electrical connections. Anything else someone has an opinion on. Thanks.

I took the belt off last night to tow it. Just put it back on to drive it into my garage and it wont start. Nice! Does turn over but no lights on gauge. Set the hood on the seat and plugged the harness in to try jiggle connections with the key on. Hood falls off and breaks the retainer clip off the harness. HaHa. Fun times. Checking things over I cant see any engine oil in sight tube. Really enjoying this now. Cant see how this would cause the gauge not to light up but thought maybe thats how a low oil shut off works, if there is one. Quick google search there is. (Mr. Sled says there is two) No oil laying on the floor of my garage, back of the truck or dripping from under the sled. Anyway, lets get this baby running. Added almost 2 litres of oil. No change. Joy!! Wifeys not home so I used her sled to drag it in my garage. Will let it thaw and dry out from being towed. Gonna take the Nytro out to clear the tears of joy. I still have a few hours to get it over the 20,000 k mark.

I feel for you on this one. I think Yamaha should have offered you a new sled. You should be able to get an extension on the warranty. A friend with a Viper that had a rod failure ended up getting an additional year. Work on them, apparently we have to help them see the way.
