Simmons vs. Pilots

i guess im one of the few that has actually rode a sled with pilots. do they corner like c&a's? not quite, but the steering effort is a ton lighter, they dont dart and they are better than 95% of the skis out there. if you want light steering for your apex and good cornering there are only 2 choices. pilots or slydogs.

LazyBastard, have you ever run Pilots on your Apex? if so I can see how you can give an educated hands on opinion. Oh that’s right you don’t have an Apex. Case in point.....just another opinion with nothing to back it up.
You most work for the pilot ski co. As much as you defend them, have you ever run Simmons? No opinion for you either then!!

I'll use your opinion if you have also have ridden simmons on an apex/attak?

First of all I have not given my opinion either way in this post, show me where I have.....dude wake up. Second of all I have ridden simmons and I felt that they steer heavy. But I haven’t ridden an Apex with them so I am not giving my opinion on this thread because the author of this thread is looking for a comparison between the two skis which I can’t give because I haven’t ridden an Apex on both. I could also say the same about you working for the Simmons Ski Co. because on every ski post you rave about the simmons. ;)!

Hey WOW, your "Apex" (which says "RX10" in the book and on your ownership, just like my sled) is SO COOL!!! Its got a 4-cylinder 4-stroke, mine just has a... wait, mine has just about the IDENTICAL engine, except yours has girly injection, yours also has a... ?? WHAT? The SAME chassis (despite what the publicity shows, it actually has the same PART NUMBERS)... Oh yeah, now I remember what yours has.... BOLD NEW GRAPHICS.

Bite me.

Now now laszybastard, don’t get you panties all in a knot, this is just a friendly debate. And you of all people know there are plenty of differences between the Apex and the RX-1. :tg:

okay guys...lets not digress...everyone defends their opinions passionately....let's not attak...

both must be good considering the strong fights for and few against..

I personally have never had a set of simmons steer heavy,,,unless they were set up wrong...but I have had them understeer..

I have never ridden the pilots and am interested...but they've had some durability issues which I know is now better for the 07's..

I dont think you can go wrong with a set of simmons set up properly or a set of 07' pilots..for our heavier sleds I'm guessing the wider 6.9's might be just right?

Sarcasm can be friendly....
My point though is that
1) They are SO SIMILAR that changes on one can be assumed to have the same effect on the other,
2) Mine's further from a stock 03RX1 than yours is.

LB so you’re saying that the rider forward seating position on the Apex doesn’t make it handle any different then the RX-1. The height of the seating position will change the COG alone. The rider forward seating position will also shift the weight towards the skis creating more ski pressure. JTD0314 sorry I don’t mean to hi-jack this thread. LB If you want to debate this any further lets start another thread.

When you're thinking about the "pilot" skis, you need to think about their history.

1) First, there was Simmons. Doo liked them so much that they copied them (poorly) "precision".
2) Simmons didn't like that so they took Doo to court and won. Doo was ordered to stop making "precision".
3) Rather than admitting to doing something ILLEGAL to make a buck, Doo decided to distract everyone from the court order by making a new ski that was just sufficiently different that it no longer infringed on patents "pilot".

Are "pilot" better? No. They just exist to confuse the weak-minded.

LOL...that is funny....I hope you were just making a joke....right?

I have ridden several BUDS sleds over past few seasons with the OLD precisions...and when they came out alot of people loved them...however of you wanted to TURN in a less then hardpack type trail, they would PUSH badly....since then we all learned how poorly the precision design was...it would shine when it came to darting..but in about every other aspect it was WORSE then traditional single carbide skis..mostly in the carving aspect...

any article anywhere will say the same thing..precisions ride up onto of the snow, the design makes them "Float".....the "weak-minded" statement really is bizarre...

Honestly I think the simmons or pilot will blow away the stock apex ski in any condition of trail or powder....But to say that one is far superior to another is really tough...

as far as light feeling, good carving.....all you need to do is look at the two designs side by side, and you can plainly see the pilots will be lighter feeling....as only one carbide rides on the ground most the time...

I know aftermarket stuff brings out everyones opinions and some guys have stronger Opinions then others....just like how much we love our 4 strokes vs the old school 2 strokers....

I dont think you can go wrong with either of these....i know guys who swear by simmons and guys who love the OLD precisions,or guys who love the pilots...but when you have used all of them at least a few times,I think you will see pilot design is different, and the latest and newest idea in designs...

bottom line is,you can setup your sled to make about any ski feel pretty good....but i found when throwing on the pilots,it was cheapest way to get best ride and turning..and easiest install.

What he said

Hey guys....I saw a few guys state that the 07 pilots are beefier, which might last longer....is this true?..i havent seen a set of 07 pilots yet...

I think ive got abit over 1000miles on mine from last season, and they look perfect...we did have 99% time really good snow conditions..so I never saw the premature wear issues with mine.

anyone got any comparo pics of 06 to 07 pilots?...maybe dootalkers?....I think i got banned there for buying an apex so i cant go back.hehe.

dan

Dan, Doo did beef up that thin area. I compared the 06 and 07 side by side and you can plainly see that the area in question is thicker. They could have gone thicker but definitely a huge improvement over the 06.
